Mom's Car Search

Everything behind finding Carol's next car, in one place: what she needs, the models and brands we researched, every car for sale within 150 miles that fits, and how each one was scored. The Overview walks through it; the other tabs hold the depth.

Finding Carol the right car

Carol is 75, retired, and lives in Ocean City, New Jersey. She drives around town and makes the occasional trip to Philadelphia to see friends. Her 2012 Camry has about 170,000 miles on it, and it is time for something newer. What she wants is simple to say and hard to shop for: a sedan that is roomy, quiet, and easy to get in and out of, with the comfort of the big Lincolns and Cadillacs she remembers, that will not surprise her with repair bills. Budget is $32,000 to $40,000, stretching to $45,000 for the right car.

This site is the whole search in one place. Every number on it came from research done in September 2026, and every car on it was actually for sale within 150 miles when the listings were captured. Here is how it was built, what each tab holds, and what happens next.

How the search was done

  1. 1

    Wrote down what Carol needs

Body, size, model years, mileage, price, colors, must-have comfort features, and the things that do not matter (hybrid, all-wheel drive, engine power). Her worry about maintenance cost became one of the biggest factors. Read the brief

  2. 2

    Researched 14 models

Started with the Camry, Crown, Accord, Lexus, Kia, and Cadillac she and Brian named, then added the Genesis G80, Avalon, Acura TLX, Chrysler 300, Maxima, Sonata, and Volvo S90. For each: rear legroom, trunk, seat height, how quiet and soft it rides, reliability, warranty, yearly repair cost, and used prices. The Tier A picks came out as Lexus ES 350, Toyota Crown Limited, and the 2022 Toyota Avalon Limited. Stage 1 findings · Fact sheets

  3. 3

Checked service and certified programs for 11 brands

Which dealers sit within 45 minutes of Ocean City, what each brand's certified pre-owned warranty adds, what transfers to a second owner, and how the brands rank on repair cost. Toyota, Honda, and Lexus came out easiest and cheapest to live with; Genesis and Volvo have no dealer within an hour. Brands & service

  4. 4

    Swept the live market

Every listing within 150 miles for those models, model year 2022 or newer, under 50,000 miles, under the cap: 286 cars. Then removed anything with an accident, a rental history, a sport trim, or a color Carol would not want. 244 cars made it through. Stage 2 findings

  5. 5

    Scored every car

Seven factors, weighted the way Carol would weigh them: comfort and seat height first, ownership cost second, then value, features, mileage, warranty, and distance. Each car gets a score out of 100 and a one-line reason. How we scored · Top picks

The plan from here

  1. Call the shortlist. Confirm each car is still there, get the out-the-door price in writing, ask for the CARFAX and window sticker, and ask whether the car can be moved to a closer store.
  2. Price the Camry separately. Get CarMax and online offers first so the trade-in is a known number before any dealer conversation.
  3. Drive the local pair first. The Sonata in Egg Harbor Township and the Chrysler 300 in Vineland give Carol a raised modern seat and a big soft sedan to compare against.
  4. Then the real contenders. The Lexus ES cars in Williamstown and Willow Grove, and the Crown Limited. The getting-in-and-out test decides between a raised seat and a plusher ride.
  5. Buy the one that passes. Written price under the cap, clean history, certified or independently inspected, in her colors, and she can work the screen herself.

Listings go stale within days. Before any visit, the market sweep gets re-run and the scores refreshed.

Comparison at a glance

Costs: the brand column is RepairPal’s average annual repair + maintenance for the brand (one methodology for every row). The model column is the best model-specific estimate found; sources differ (RepairPal, CarEdge, KBB, Edmunds) so treat it as directional. Fit scores are 1–5; for maintenance worry, 1 = least worry.

Acura TLX

Years in scope: 2023, 2024, 2025
Segment: mid-size luxury

Fit for Mom: The TLX is the value and reliability leader on paper - RepairPal’s top-ranked luxury midsize car ($440/yr), a strong CPO program with 7yr/100k powertrain coverage, and low-mile 2023-2025 Technology cars at $31-36k, well under budget. But it is the wrong shape for this buyer: a low (5.3-in clearance), sport-tuned sedan with a firm-ish ride, a cabin reviewers and CR call louder than rivals, only 34.9 in of rear legroom, a 13.5 cu ft trunk, and a touchpad infotainment system that is hard to use. The one-year-only 2023 Advance adds ventilated seats, heated wheel and a 360 camera but is rare and AWD-only. Premium fuel is recommended. Fine as a budget backup; it does not deliver the quiet, easy-entry town-car experience the ES does.

Size and entry

  • Length 194.6 in, wheelbase 113.0 in
  • Rear legroom 34.9 in, front headroom 37.2 in, trunk 13.5 cu ft
  • Seat height / ground clearance: 5.3 in. Ground clearance 5.3 in (KBB) - the lowest of the three, with a 56.4-in roof and a deliberately low, sport-sedan seating position. Owner forums complain the seat ‘doesn’t lift high enough’ and that ‘getting in and out is not easy because you sit down low with small windows.’ Autoweb notes a ‘big-car feel from the driver’s seat’ and wide cabin, but rear legroom (34.9 in) is ‘tight unless the front seats move well forward.’ Not an easy-entry car for a 75-year-old.

Comfort

  • Ride: balanced. Cabin: average.
  • Reviewers: Edmunds: the ride ‘achieves a great balance between suppleness and composure over a variety of road surfaces, though sharp-edged road bumps can send a prominent thunk through the cabin’; noise ‘is well abated’ but instrumented testing shows it ‘a few decibels louder on the inside than rivals.’ Consumer Reports: ‘comfortable ride’ but ‘the loud cabin, confounding infotainment touchpad, and unimpressive fuel economy’ leave it short of rivals, with ‘road and engine noise’ undermining the premium feel. Autoweb: ‘The ride is firm but not uncomfortable unless you prefer the extra-cushy focus of a Lexus ES.’

Reliability

  • Consumer Reports: CR 2024 overview: predicted reliability and owner satisfaction listed ‘NA’ (insufficient sample); road-test verdict praises a perky powertrain and comfortable ride but faults the loud cabin, touchpad infotainment and fuel economy. CR says the 2025 TLX is expected to have about-average reliability based on the Acura brand score.
  • J.D. Power: 76. RepairPal: 4.5/5
  • Notable issues/recalls: NHTSA 24V950 (2021-2023 TLX, 167 cars): fuel filler neck improperly welded to tank, possible fuel leak; replacement free.; NHTSA 25V391 (2021-2025 TLX): brake pedal pivot pin not secured, pedal can shift position; free repair.; NHTSA 26V332 (2023 TLX): front passenger seat weight sensor may crack/short and cause unintended airbag deployment; free repair.; NHTSA 25V031 (2021-2025 Type S ONLY): FI-ECU software may cause stall - not applicable to 2.0T Technology/Advance.; Fuel-pump module recall on some 2023 TLX (owner letters Sept 2024) - confirm completion.; Widely criticized True Touchpad infotainment interface (Edmunds, CR) - a usability rather than reliability concern, but relevant for an older driver. RepairPal: 0.2 unscheduled shop visits/yr, 1st of 31 luxury midsize cars.

Ownership cost

  • Annual maintenance + repair: $440; 5-year: $2,546
  • Oil change ~$150; tire set ~n/a; premium fuel: no
  • Insurance: Lowest purchase price of the three and strong safety ratings (NHTSA 5-star, IIHS Good); premiums should be roughly comparable to or slightly under the Lexus ES. No model-specific dollar figure captured.

Warranty and CPO

  • Factory: 4/50k basic, 6/70k powertrain
  • CPO: Acura Precision Certified Pre-Owned: extends non-powertrain coverage up to 24 months beyond the 4yr/50k new-car warranty (capped at 100,000 total odometer miles) and provides a 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty measured from the original in-service date; no deductible; eligibility under 6 years old and under 80,000 miles; 182-point inspection; one complimentary maintenance visit (oil/filter, rotation, filters, fluids) within the first 2 yrs/100k; 24-hr roadside, trip interruption; Acura Care Certified Additional Coverage (transferable) can extend to 7yr/100k non-powertrain. Transferability of base CPO coverage not confirmed in fetched sources. Some third-party summaries describe it as ‘6yr/100k bumper-to-bumper + 7yr/100k powertrain’ - same program measured from in-service date.

Service near Ocean City

  • Dealers within ~45 min: Key Acura of Atlantic City (formerly Boardwalk Acura)
  • Access rating: 4/5. Brand parts/labor: Honda mechanicals with a modest luxury premium on parts and dealer labor; independent shops handle them easily.

  • 2022, under 50k mi: $27,000–$34,000
  • Availability: Plentiful and cheaper than the ES: CarGurus (Sept 2026) lists ~569 used 2023 TLX nationally (avg $35,300, range $26,987-$51,595; Technology FWD is the most common trim with 423 listings, prices softened 2.1% YoY); 2024 avg $36,338; 2025 avg $41,039 with near-new Technology cars at $34-36k. Examples: 2023 Technology FWD 16.7k mi $31,493 (Acura certified); 2023 Advance SH-AWD 55k mi $31,449; 2025 Technology 1.4-1.6k mi $35,972; 2025 Technology 24.6k mi $33,949. KBB used range for 2024: $33,900-$49,700 (incl. A-Spec/Type S). 2022 all-trim average $33,310 (NY metro $34,204). Advance is rarer (one model year). Strong dealer presence in NJ (Bridgewater, Paragon, Verona) and Philadelphia/Delaware. Bands derived from listings, not a formal valuation.

Notes: Data gaps: driver-seat memory on Technology not confirmed by any fetched trim page (null); heated steering wheel on 2024-2025 Technology assumed absent (KBB 2023 lists it optional on base/A-Spec, standard only on Advance/Type S) - verify; power trunk set false because no source lists it on any trim. Tire set cost null (255/40R19 on Technology; SimpleTire shows aftermarket options but no OEM price). Acura’s official acuranews.com spec sheet and acura.com fact sheet returned 403, so dimensions come from cars.com/KBB/Edmunds snippets (rear legroom 34.9, trunk 13.5, front headroom 37.2, curb weight 3,756 lb). J.D. Power 76/100 is the 2022 VDS figure cited by a dealer page (a later study cited 75); jdpower.com blocked. CarEdge 5-year figure ($2,546) is maintenance+repairs years 1-5. Cars.com MSRPs ($44,050 for 2023 Technology) appear to include destination; Acura press MSRP is $43,850. Edmunds TCO pages returned 403.

Cadillac CT5

Years in scope: 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026
Segment: mid-size luxury

Fit for Mom: The CT5 is the closest thing Cadillac still sells to a traditional sedan, and a 2023-2024 Premium Luxury 2.0T with the Climate Package lands comfortably inside a $32-45k budget with CPO coverage. It is genuinely roomy in front with excellent seats, but it is a rear-drive sport sedan at heart: reviewers describe a firm-to-balanced ride with some head-toss on undulating pavement (no adaptive dampers on Premium Luxury), only average highway hush, tight rear headroom, and a small 11.9 cu ft trunk with a narrow opening. The low hip point and 57-in roofline make entry noticeably more of a drop than an old Town Car or DTS. Ownership costs are the strong suit: dense dealer coverage (a store ~15 miles from Ocean City), cheap GM parts, CarEdge’s $3.1k five-year estimate, and Consumer Reports’ about-average reliability; the only recurring cost penalty is the premium-fuel label, which is small at low annual miles.

Size and entry

  • Length 193.8 in, wheelbase 116.0 in
  • Rear legroom 37.9 in, front headroom 39.0 in, trunk 11.9 cu ft
  • Seat height / ground clearance: not published. Low, conventional sport-sedan hip point; overall height ~57 in. Rear headroom is only 36.6 in and U.S. News notes taller rear passengers ‘may have to duck to enter and exit’. Front seat adjusts very low (good for tall drivers, less good for a 75-year-old who wants to slide in). Hip room 53.7 in front/rear. Ground clearance not published in any fetched source (Cars.com lists N/A).

Comfort

  • Ride: balanced. Cabin: average.
  • Reviewers: Reviewers split on the CT5. Consumer Reports calls the suspension ‘firm, taut’ with agile handling like a European sports sedan; KBB says lower trims are ‘tuned for comfort rather than sportiness’; Capital One’s 2025 Premium Luxury test found a softer ride than the V but with ‘nose bobbing over sections of undulating pavement’ because adaptive damping is not offered on that trim, and ‘a surprising amount of ambient noise’ on the highway. Edmunds’ 2025 summary rates ride quality ‘pretty poor for a luxury car’. Seats draw consistent praise (TopSpeed: cushioning and lumbar ‘frankly excellent’); rear legroom is good but headroom is tight, and the 11.9 cu ft trunk is among the smallest in class with a narrow opening.

Reliability

  • Consumer Reports: CR recommended the 2024 CT5 and put the 2026 CT5 on its Best Luxury Cars to Buy list. 2026 scores (as reported by GM Authority): Overall 67, Road Test 75, Predicted Reliability 48/100 (‘about average’ based on 2023-2025 data plus the Cadillac brand score), Predicted Owner Satisfaction 62; 64% of 2024 CT5 owners would buy again.
  • J.D. Power: 84. RepairPal: 3.0/5
  • Notable issues/recalls: 22V903000 (Dec 2022): daytime running lights may not turn off with headlights, 2020-2023 CT4/CT5 - software fix (OTA or dealer); 25V148000 (Mar 2025): 10-speed transmission internal damage / wheel lock-up, 2020-2021 only (not in scope years); 21V611000 (Aug 2021): roof-rail side-curtain airbag installation, 2020-2022; 26V114000 (Feb 2026): 2026 radio setting may block electronic owner’s manual download; 2025 model year: zero NHTSA recalls per RepairPal as of fetch date, but CarBuzz reports early 2025 owner complaints (engine cylinder failure, infotainment glitches, sensor faults, rattles) and recommends 2023-2024 pre-facelift cars as the reliability sweet spot; 2024 had only 2 NHTSA complaints; RepairPal: Cadillac brand 3.0/5 (26th of 32 brands), 0.4 shop visits/yr, 17% severe-repair probability; CT5-specific data insufficient

Ownership cost

  • Annual maintenance + repair: $783; 5-year: $3,121
  • Oil change ~$87; tire set ~n/a; premium fuel: yes
  • Insurance: No verified CT5-specific premium data could be fetched (insure.com, The Zebra and Insurify pages all failed). Expect typical mid-size luxury sedan rates; GM parts availability keeps collision repair cheaper than German rivals. Treat as unverified.

Warranty and CPO

  • Factory: 4/50k basic, 6/70k powertrain
  • CPO: Cadillac Certified Pre-Owned: 172-point inspection; 6-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty measured from the ORIGINAL in-service date (extends the factory 6/70k); plus a 1-year/unlimited-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty that begins when the 4/50k factory warranty expires (so roughly 5 years of comprehensive coverage from new); $0 deductible; fully transferable to later owners at no charge; 24-hr roadside assistance and courtesy transportation; OnStar/SiriusXM trials. Eligibility limits reported inconsistently by secondary sources (ConsumerAffairs cites under ~4-6 model years and mileage caps); confirm with dealer. Factory basic warranty and powertrain warranty both transfer to second owners.

  • 2024, under 20k mi: $33,500–$40,000

  • Availability: Very common in the NJ/PA/DE market: five Cadillac stores in South Jersey (Ciocca Cadillac of Atlantic City ~15 mi from Ocean City, Cadillac of Turnersville, Holman Cadillac in Mount Laurel, Pine Belt Cadillac in Toms River, Bridgeton Chevrolet Cadillac GMC) plus Philadelphia-metro stores (Hill/Newtown Square, Bergey’s/Plymouth Meeting, Faulkner/Trevose, Fred Beans/Doylestown) and Delaware Cadillac in Wilmington. FC Kerbeck near Philadelphia specializes in low-mile used Cadillacs. Plenty of 2.0T Luxury/Premium Luxury CPO inventory; V6 Premium Luxury and V-Series cars price higher and should be excluded.

Notes: Data gaps: ground clearance/seat height not published by any fetchable source; 2025-26 combined EPA mpg not captured; standard-vs-package status of heated seats and adaptive cruise on 2023-24 trims could not be confirmed from primary sources (Cadillac.com, Edmunds, Car and Driver, MotorTrend, TrueCar and J.D. Power pages all returned 403); tire cost and insurance premiums unverified. J.D. Power 84/100 is the 2024 Quality & Reliability score (via CarBuzz); a 79/100 score for 2025 appeared in a search summary but was not verified on jdpower.com. Cadillac CPO eligibility windows differ between secondary sources. Prices reflect listings observed Sept 2026 and CarGurus data dated May 2026. Web search budget was exhausted mid-task, so several items relied on WebFetch of secondary sites. OWNERSHIP COST DETAIL: annual figure is RepairPal’s Cadillac brand average ($783); CT5-specific RepairPal data is insufficient. CarEdge estimates $3,121 maintenance+repairs over the first 5 years (yr1 $411 rising to yr5 $899; $9,818 over 10 yrs; 13% chance of a $500+ repair in 5 yrs), which beats the luxury-sedan average by $469. Oil change: RepairPal $72-$101 (midpoint used). Fuel: fueleconomy.gov and KBB list Premium Gasoline for every CT5 engine (EPA annual fuel cost $2,850 RWD 2.0T at 15k mi/yr); owner-forum and dealer sources say the 2.0T manual since 2022 does not strictly REQUIRE 93 octane and will run on 87 with reduced power/economy, but the 3.0T V6 does require premium. At ~5,000 miles/yr the premium surcharge is roughly $100-150/yr. Tire cost not verified (18-19 in all-season, no source fetched). USED MARKET DETAIL: Bands are for 2.0T Luxury / Premium Luxury asking prices (Sept 2026 listings). 2023 examples: Luxury RWD $32,665 @19.5k mi, Premium Luxury RWD $34,847 @12.6k mi; Cars.com 2023 average $34,252, CarGurus 2023 average $36,094 (May 2026). 2024 examples under 20k: Luxury AWD $33,996 @16.6k, $36,988 @8k; Cars.com 2024 average $36,248, CarGurus $38,754; a 2024 Premium Luxury V6 AWD with 4k miles was $43,500 (KBB listing). 2022 under 50k: $25,900-$37,769 across Luxury/Premium Luxury, nationwide average $31,545. KBB fair purchase: 2023 Premium Luxury ~$28,100, 2024 Premium Luxury ~$32,100 (these are dealer-transaction guides and run below asking). CarGurus shows CT5 prices softening 1-3%/yr for 2022-2023 and ~13% YoY for 2024.

Chrysler 300

Years in scope: 2022, 2023
Segment: large

Fit for Mom: The 300 is the closest thing left to the Town Car she loved: a 120-inch-wheelbase, rear-drive, body-on-a-big-frame feel with a soft ride, hushed cabin, 40 inches of rear legroom and a 16.3 cu ft trunk, all on regular gas. A 2022-2023 Touring L with the Comfort Group (ventilated seats, heated wheel, memory) and SafetyTec Plus (adaptive cruise) fits comfortably under $35k, leaving budget for an extended service contract. Seating is upright and tall for a sedan with big doors, though a sunroof car sits the driver lower. The worries are the model’s discontinuation (dealer familiarity and resale will erode), Stellantis’ electrical/infotainment glitch history, and 3.5/5 RepairPal reliability; mitigate with a fully updated, recall-cleared car and a Mopar Maximum Care plan. Skip the 300S/300C.

Target trims

Trim Years MSRP new Powertrain Fuel MPG Heated Ventilated Htd wheel Sunroof Screen Wireless CarPlay 360 cam Leather

300C 2023 $55,000 6.4L HEMI V8 (485 hp), 8-speed automatic, RWD, adaptive dampers, Brembo brakes premium 18 yes yes yes optional 8.4 no none leather

Size and entry

  • Length 198.6 in, wheelbase 120.0 in
  • Rear legroom 40.1 in, front headroom 38.6 in, trunk 16.3 cu ft
  • Seat height / ground clearance: 5.0 in. Ground clearance 4.7-5.0 in (iSeeCars). No published hip-point height. Overall height 58.5-59.2 in is tall for a sedan and the 300 has an upright, chair-like seating position with 56.2 in front hip room and wide door openings, so entry is easier than in low, swoopy sedans; the Capital One review notes the panoramic sunroof forces a lower seat setting (front headroom drops to ~36.9 in with the sunroof), so a non-sunroof car preserves the higher seating position. Rear doors open wide; 40.1 in rear legroom.

Comfort

  • Ride: soft. Cabin: quiet.
  • Reviewers: Consumer Reports’ road test calls the 300 a ‘capable, sophisticated, and luxuriously large sedan’ whose ride comfort and quietness give up little to Mercedes-Benz or Lexus rivals; its roomy cabin ‘stays hushed under way’ and muffles wind and road noise. KBB praises the ‘long wheelbase and compliant suspension’ as a cross-country highway cruiser with adult-friendly rear headroom and legroom, and CarsDirect notes the ‘soft ride quality’ (while calling the dynamics dated). J.D. Power/US News owner feedback (245 owners, 93% recommend) lists comfort as the top strength. Smaller 17/18-in wheels on Touring/Touring L ride softer than the 20-in wheels on 300S/300C.

Reliability

  • Consumer Reports: CR’s 2023 overview page is paywalled; numeric predicted-reliability and owner-satisfaction scores could not be retrieved. Publicly visible: 1 recall alert, IIHS/NHTSA crash results Good except Marginal in the small-overlap front test, and a road-test summary praising ride/quietness. Historically CR rated the 2018-2020 300s below average on reliability (electrical/infotainment), with the last years improving; treat as unverified.
  • J.D. Power: n/a. RepairPal: 3.5/5
  • Notable issues/recalls: RepairPal: 3.5/5 reliability, avg annual repair cost $631, 0.3 shop visits/yr, 12% severe-repair probability; ranks 7th of 12 full-size cars. Common items: PCM/TCM software updates for rough/shuddering shifts; software updates for interior electrical and lighting glitches.; Auto Reliability Index: 2022 scored 73/100, 2023 scored 75/100 (best of the 2018-2023 generation). 2018 was the worst year (66/100, 63 electrical-system complaints); 2022-2023 show far fewer complaints.; 2023 recall NHTSA 24V-112 (Feb 2024): parking brake may be improperly adjusted, roll-away risk; ~1,808 vehicles; dealer adjustment free.; 2022 recalls NHTSA 22V-504 (Jul 2022) and expansion 22V-808 (Oct 2022): TPMS sensor battery may fail prematurely; sensors inspected/replaced free.; Electrical: the Uconnect 4C/8.4 system and body electronics were the generation’s known weak spot; most fixes are software flashes. Verify all software updates and recalls are completed on any candidate car.; Discontinued: final 300C rolled off the Brampton, Ontario line in December 2023 and the plant closed for retooling. The 300 shares its LX platform, 3.6L V6 and 8-speed with the Dodge Charger/Challenger and Jeep/Ram Pentastar applications, so mechanical parts and independent-shop expertise remain plentiful; model-specific trim/body parts may get scarcer over time.

Ownership cost

  • Annual maintenance + repair: $631; 5-year: $9,928
  • Oil change ~$170; tire set ~n/a; premium fuel: no
  • Insurance: Moderate. Large, inexpensive-to-repair domestic sedan with regular fuel; V6 Touring L should insure below a Volvo S90 and roughly in line with a Maxima. Avoid the 300C/300S V8s, which carry performance-car premiums. No model-specific quote data retrieved.

Warranty and CPO

  • Factory: 3/36k basic, 5/60k powertrain
  • CPO: Chrysler Certified Pre-Owned: 7-year/100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty measured from original in-service date, plus 3-month/3,000-mile Maximum Care (bumper-to-bumper) that starts at CPO purchase or at expiry of the 3/36 basic warranty, whichever is later. Eligibility: 5 model years old or newer with 75,000 miles or fewer, clean title, 125-point inspection. 24/7 roadside assistance during Maximum Care, vehicle history report, 3-month SiriusXM. A deductible applies (amount not verified; commonly $100). Transferability to a subsequent private owner was not confirmed by the sources retrieved. Practical note: a 2023 car remains CPO-eligible only until it turns 5 years old, and CPO 300s are now uncommon because the model is discontinued; extended Mopar Maximum Care service contracts can be purchased separately.

Service near Ocean City

  • Dealers within ~45 min: Atlantic Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Fiat, Kindle Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram (Kindle Auto Plaza)
  • Access rating: 5/5. Brand parts/labor: Parts are cheap but repair frequency and severity run higher; CarEdge’s 5-year maintenance figure ($3,565) is the highest of the mainstream brands here.

Used market (Sept 2026)

  • 2023, under 20k mi: $28,000–$36,000
  • 2024, under 20k mi: n/a
  • 2022, under 50k mi: $24,000–$33,000
  • Availability: Thin but present in the NJ/PA/DE market. Cars.com (Sept 2026): 2023 Touring L nationwide average $31,717, from $25,998; examples include $31,787 @ 14,922 mi AWD in Vineland, NJ, $28,998 @ 17,181 mi (CarMax, deliverable to NJ), $34,995 @ 19,074 mi and $35,995 @ 3,382 mi (Worcester, MA). CarGurus 2023 Touring L AWD: 27 listings, avg $29,382, range $25,998-$35,995; sub-20k-mile cars $26,500-$33,000. 2022 Touring L: Cars.com average $25,698 (range $15,995-$32,998); $32,998 @ 5,411 mi (CarMax to Wayne, NJ), $29,689 @ 35,846 mi. KBB 2023 Touring L fair purchase price $25,340 (private party $23,540-$24,840), so dealer asks above $33k are premium-package/very-low-mile cars. No 2024 model year exists. Expect a handful of candidates within 100 miles of Ocean City at any time; CarMax transfers widen the pool. AWD cars are common in the Northeast and slightly pricier.

Notes: Data gaps: Edmunds spec/TCO and Car and Driver pages returned 403; five_year_maintenance_repair_usd ($9,928 = $7,791 maintenance + $2,137 repairs) is the Edmunds True Cost to Own figure for the 2023 300 as surfaced in a search summary, not read from the page directly, so treat as approximate; annual figure is RepairPal’s $631. J.D. Power quality/reliability score and CR numeric scores unavailable (paywall/timeouts). Tire set cost not found. Front headroom 38.6 in is without sunroof (~36.9 in with). Seat height above ground is not published; ground clearance used. MSRP sources disagree by ~$1,000 for Touring L (Cars.com $39,345 vs CarsDirect $38,340). Package content (Comfort/Popular Equipment/SafetyTec Plus) is from CarsDirect for 2023 and matches the 2022 structure, but confirm on the window sticker. Discontinuation: 2023 was the final model year (production ended Dec 2023, Brampton); parts commonality with Charger/Challenger and huge Stellantis dealer count keep service easy, but expect steeper depreciation and fewer CPO units.

Genesis G80

Years in scope: 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025
Segment: mid-size luxury

Fit for Mom: Of the two, the G80 is the more Town Car-like: a long 118.5-in wheelbase, hushed cabin that reviewers and owners rank near the G90 and 7 Series for quietness, wide plush seats, 38.7 in of rear legroom and a cushy, cruiser-tuned ride (the non-Sport 2.5T Standard or Advanced is the one to buy; avoid Sport Prestige’s firmer setup and 20-in wheels). A 2023 or 2024 2.5T Advanced with ventilated seats and panoramic roof fits the $36-45k window, and a Genesis Certified example restores the 10-yr/100k powertrain warranty that would otherwise shrink to 5/60k for a second owner. The trade-offs are ergonomic and logistical: it is still a low 5.5-in-clearance sedan to sit down into, the 13.1 cu ft trunk is modest, Consumer Reports rates recent G80 reliability below average (mostly electronics), premium fuel is specified, and the only South Jersey Genesis retailer is ~55 miles away in Marlton, so Service Valet pickup and the 10-yr CPO roadside plan matter more than usual.

Size and entry

  • Length 196.7 in, wheelbase 118.5 in
  • Rear legroom 38.7 in, front headroom 41.1 in, trunk 13.1 cu ft
  • Seat height / ground clearance: 5.5 in. Long-wheelbase, near-full-size sedan (118.5-in wheelbase, 196.7-in length, 57.7-in height) with a low 5.5-in minimum ground clearance and a conventional low sedan hip point, so it is still a ‘sit down into it’ car, not a crossover. Doors are long and the 58.3-in front shoulder room and 41.1-in front headroom (with sunroof; 39.4 without) give an open, easy-to-swing-legs-in cabin; a front-passenger ‘walk-in’ device slides the seat back when the door opens. Rear legroom 38.7 in, rear headroom 38.2 in. Official 2024 spec sheet figures.

Comfort

  • Ride: balanced. Cabin: very quiet.
  • Reviewers: Edmunds calls the G80 ‘supremely comfortable in most situations… an effortless cruiser, with a cushy ride, super smooth transmission’ and praises plush, wide, supportive seats (‘haven’t had a stiff or sore back since driving this for 3 weeks’, per an owner; another owner measured it third-quietest of seven cars behind the G90 and BMW 7 Series). KBB describes an ‘exceptionally quiet and smooth ride’ and a ‘quiet cabin’ with supportive seating. Consumer Guide’s 2.5T Standard test found the cabin ‘exceedingly quiet’ but the base (non-adaptive) suspension ‘isn’t as supple as that of its august peers’. Trunk (13.1 cu ft) is on the small side for the class and rear seatbacks do not fold.

Reliability

  • Consumer Reports: Consumer Reports expects the 2026 G80 to be LESS reliable than the average new car (based on 2023-2025 data plus the Genesis brand score) and rated the 2024 G80 less reliable than other cars of its model year. Genesis as a brand sits 21st of 26 in CR’s predicted-reliability ranking; the main trouble spots are in-car electronics (glitching digital displays, HVAC, backup cameras). CarGurus’ buying guide, by contrast, rates 2023-2024 second-gen cars ‘Great’ and 2025-2026 ‘Average’ for reliability.
  • J.D. Power: 88. RepairPal: 3.5/5
  • Notable issues/recalls: 26V229000 (Apr 2026): fuel may leak at fuel-pipe/fuel-rail connection, 2021-2025 G80 - inspect/tighten or replace pipe (fire risk); check completion on any used car; 25V105000 (Feb 2025): instrument-cluster software error can blank the display, 2023-2024; 26V019000 (Jan 2026): instrument-cluster display failure, 2025-2026; 23V630000 / 24V282000 (Sep 2023 / Apr 2024): fuel pump failure -> loss of drive power, 2022-2023; 23V094000 (Feb 2023): front seat-belt pretensioner may deploy abnormally, 2021-2023; RepairPal owner-reported problems: alarm-system failures tied to lapsed connected services; persistent battery drain; J.D. Power: G80 named Best Upper Midsize Premium Car in the 2024 Initial Quality Study (4th straight year); 2025 Quality & Reliability 88/100

Ownership cost

  • Annual maintenance + repair: $565; 5-year: n/a
  • Oil change ~$410; tire set ~n/a; premium fuel: yes
  • Insurance: No verified G80-specific premium data could be fetched (insure.com, The Zebra and Insurify pages failed). Genesis parts/labor run cheaper than German rivals but the brand’s standalone retailer network is thin in South Jersey. Treat as unverified.

Warranty and CPO

  • Factory: 5/60k basic, 10/100k (original owner only); 5/60k for second and subsequent owners powertrain
  • CPO: Genesis Certified Pre-Owned: eligibility 5 model years or newer, under 60,000 miles, clean CARFAX; 191-point inspection. Coverage: 6-year/75,000-mile limited (bumper-to-bumper) warranty AND the full remainder of the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, both measured from the original in-service date, so CPO restores the long powertrain coverage a private-sale second owner would otherwise lose. Transferable to the next private owner. 10-year/unlimited-mile roadside assistance; rental reimbursement $50/day up to 10 days; travel reimbursement $100/day up to $500 per occurrence when 150+ miles from home; 3 years Genesis Connected Services. Deductible not stated on the fetched pages. NON-CPO second owner: the 2023 Owner’s Handbook states the New Vehicle Limited Warranty (5/60k), anti-perforation, emissions and replacement-parts warranties ‘apply to the vehicle regardless of a change in ownership,’ but ‘the 10-year/100,000 mile Powertrain Limited Warranty is not transferable and applies only to the original owner… For subsequent owners, powertrain components are covered under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty for 5 years/60,000 miles.’ A lessee who buys out the lease keeps the 10/100k. The 3-year connected-services subscription does not transfer.

Service near Ocean City

  • Dealers within ~45 min: none found / see brands.md
  • Access rating: 2/5. Brand parts/labor: Not rated by RepairPal; parts are Hyundai-derived but only Genesis retailers do warranty work, and the nearest is 70 minutes away. Figure is a CarEdge-derived estimate.

Used market (Sept 2026)

  • 2023, under 20k mi: $36,000–$41,000
  • 2024, under 20k mi: $39,500–$45,500
  • 2022, under 50k mi: $27,500–$33,000
  • Availability: Less common than the CT5 locally. Genesis has 10 New Jersey retailers but only ONE in South Jersey (Genesis of Cherry Hill in Marlton, roughly 55 miles from Ocean City); the next nearest is Genesis of Freehold. Philadelphia metro has seven (Conshohocken, Doylestown, West Chester, Downingtown, Limerick/Pottstown, Springfield, Willow Grove) and Delaware has Genesis of New Castle. Used 2.5T inventory turns up at Genesis stores and at Hyundai/other-brand dealers (CarMax, Nissan, CDJR stores in the listings), so CPO examples are concentrated at the Genesis retailers in Marlton, Freehold and the Philly suburbs. KBB also lists Genesis service centers near Atlantic City/Toms River, likely Hyundai-affiliated, but that was not verified.

Notes: Data gaps: Edmunds True Cost to Own and CarEdge G80 maintenance pages were unreachable, so the five-year maintenance/repair estimate is null and the annual figure is RepairPal’s Genesis brand average; RepairPal’s G80 oil-change estimate ($396-$424) looks anomalous and should be re-quoted locally; insurance and tire costs unverified; wireless CarPlay status for 2022-2024 not confirmed from a primary source; 2023-2024 package MSRPs come from CarsDirect (secondary). Dimensions and per-package features come from the official 2024 Genesis G80 spec sheet PDF; warranty-transfer language is quoted from the official 2023 Owner’s Handbook. J.D. Power 88/100 (2025) was confirmed only via a dealer page citing J.D. Power. Web search budget was exhausted mid-task; Genesis.com, Edmunds, Car and Driver, MotorTrend, TrueCar and jdpower.com all returned 403 to direct fetches. Prices reflect listings observed Sept 2026 and CarGurus data dated May 2026. OWNERSHIP COST DETAIL: annual figure is RepairPal’s Genesis brand average repair cost ($565; RepairPal separately lists $524 annual maintenance); RepairPal says it lacks enough G80-specific data. five_year null: Edmunds True Cost to Own and CarEdge G80 pages could not be fetched; a search summary attributed to Edmunds put year-4 maintenance for a 2025 G80 at ‘over $3,300’ but this was not verified. Oil change: RepairPal quotes $396-$424 ($335 parts), which looks anomalous versus typical dealer pricing for a 6-qt synthetic change; flag for a quote from Genesis of Cherry Hill. Complimentary 3-yr/36k maintenance with Service Valet applies to the original owner; transfer to second owners not confirmed. Fuel: fueleconomy.gov lists Premium Gasoline for the 2.5T (EPA annual fuel cost $3,100 AWD at 15k mi/yr) and Genesis rates horsepower/EPA ‘with premium fuel’; KBB and Consumer Guide say premium required, while owner forums report the 2.5T runs acceptably on 87 with reduced output. Tire cost unverified (18-19 in all-season; 20-in on Sport Prestige are pricier). USED MARKET DETAIL: Bands are 2.5T asking prices observed Sept 2026. 2023 under 20k mi: $39,708 @20.3k (AWD) and $40,998 @17.8k (RWD, CarMax); CarGurus shows a 2023 2.5T RWD @10.6k mi at $36,620; Cars.com 2023 2.5T average $34,289 (all mileages), CarGurus 2023 average $36,024 (May 2026). 2024 under 20k: $43,257 CPO @13.4k and $45,054 @15k (both at NJ Genesis stores); Cars.com 2024 2.5T average $39,548, CarGurus $43,857. 2022 under 50k: $29,724-$32,407 for 2.5T RWD at 32-51k mi; CarGurus 2022 average $30,463-$30,523; KBB 2022 2.5T fair purchase ~$27,600. KBB fair purchase 2023 2.5T ~$29,200 and 2024 2.5T ~$36,300 (dealer-transaction guides, below asking). CarGurus: 2023 prices down ~3% YoY, 2022 down ~2.5%. Advanced-package cars (ventilated seats + sunroof) sit toward the top of each band; Sport Prestige and 3.5T above it.

Honda Accord

Years in scope: 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026
Segment: mid-size

Fit for Mom: The Accord is the roomiest car in this set, not the smallest: class-leading 40.8 in of rear legroom, a 16.7 cu ft trunk and 195.7 in overall length, so the buyer’s doubt about size is misplaced on paper; the only real space limit is rear headroom under the sloping roof. Reviewers describe a composed, well-damped ride and a quiet cabin (a notch behind the Camry and Sonata Hybrid for hush), with the EX-L Hybrid on 17-inch tires being the softer, cheaper-to-shoe choice and the Touring adding ventilated seats and a heated wheel. The trade-off for an older driver is a low hip point – this is a conventional low sedan you lower yourself into, with no seat-memory on any trim. Ownership cost is the best-documented of the three (RepairPal $400/yr, 1st of 24 midsize cars) and a sub-20k-mile 2024 Touring Hybrid runs about $29.5-33.5k, well inside budget, though the buyer should confirm the four 2023-2025 hybrid recalls (especially 25V785 loss-of-power software) are closed.

Target trims

Trim Years MSRP new Powertrain Fuel MPG Heated Ventilated Htd wheel Sunroof Screen Wireless CarPlay 360 cam Leather
Touring Hybrid 2023–2026 $39,495 2.0L I-4 two-motor hybrid, 204 hp / 247 lb-ft, e-CVT, FWD regular 44 yes yes yes moonroof 12.3 yes none leather
EX-L Hybrid 2023–2026 $35,095 2.0L I-4 two-motor hybrid, 204 hp / 247 lb-ft, e-CVT, FWD regular 48 yes no no moonroof 12.3 yes none leather

Size and entry

  • Length 195.7 in, wheelbase 111.4 in
  • Rear legroom 40.8 in, front headroom 39.5 in, trunk 16.7 cu ft
  • Seat height / ground clearance: 5.3 in. Low sedan: 57.1 in overall height, 5.3 in ground clearance; no published hip-point. AutoGuide notes the front seats are ‘mounted low’; The Autopian notes ‘easy ingress and ergonomic positioning.’ Expect a sit-down-and-swing-in motion rather than a step-in. Rear headroom 37.3 in with a tapering roofline (Cars.com: ‘limited rear headroom for tall adults’). On the buyer’s size doubt: the Accord has the LONGEST rear legroom (40.8 in) and LARGEST trunk (16.7 cu ft) of the three cars researched, and is the longest overall (195.7 in) – it is the roomiest of this group, not the smallest.

Comfort

  • Ride: balanced. Cabin: quiet.
  • Reviewers: Edmunds (8.0/10) found the Accord ‘soaking up major bumps and bruises without issue’ even on 19-inch wheels and said it ‘does a good job of keeping unwanted noise out of the cabin,’ though the driver’s seat ‘could use a bit more padding.’ Consumer Reports calls the ride comfortable with a suspension ‘on the firm side’ but compliant, and says the Accord is quiet ‘though less so than the Toyota Camry’ because of some road noise; CR notes the 17-inch tires (EX/EX-L) ride slightly better than the 19s. The Autopian called the Touring Hybrid ‘serene, quiet’ with front seats like ‘chaise longues’ and a comfort-oriented suspension, and AutoGuide said the hybrid is ‘so quiet it’s hard to make out the 2.0-liter’ in Normal mode. Some owner reviews on Edmunds report door rattles on rough roads.

Reliability

  • Consumer Reports: CR rates the 2023 and 2024 Accord (gas) ‘more reliable than other cars from the same model year’ and the 2024 Accord Hybrid ‘about average.’ CR notes 5 NHTSA recalls on 2023, 3 on 2024 gas, 4 on 2024 Hybrid.
  • J.D. Power: n/a. RepairPal: 4.5/5
  • Notable issues/recalls: NHTSA 25V785 (2023-2025 Accord Hybrid): integrated control module CPU software may reset while driving causing loss of drive power; dealer reprograms free; owner letters Jan 2026. Confirm completed on any used example.; 2023-2024 Accord Hybrid: high-pressure fuel pump may crack and leak; inspect/replace free (letters Feb 2025).; 2023 Accord Hybrid: e-CVT possibly improperly manufactured, loss of drive power; e-CVT replaced free (letters Oct 2023).; 2023-2024 Accord Hybrid: in-tank fuel pump module may fail; replaced free (letters Sept 2024).; RepairPal: Accord ranks 1st of 24 midsize cars, 0.3 unscheduled shop visits/yr, 10% severe-repair probability.

Ownership cost

  • Annual maintenance + repair: $400; 5-year: $2,000
  • Oil change ~$140; tire set ~$700; premium fuel: no
  • Insurance: No verified premium figures found (insurance-cost pages were unreachable). Accord is a high-volume mainstream sedan with strong safety ratings; expect ordinary midsize-sedan premiums. Hybrid trims carry slightly higher repair-cost exposure (battery/e-CVT) than the gas LX/EX, but that is covered by Honda’s 8-yr/100k-mile hybrid-component warranty.

Warranty and CPO

  • Factory: 3/36k basic, 5/60k (hybrid battery and hybrid components 8/100k) powertrain
  • CPO: HondaTrue Certified: vehicles generally up to 6 years old / under 80,000 miles; powertrain coverage extended to 7 years/100,000 miles from original in-service date; non-powertrain coverage adds 1 yr/12k (Certified) or 2 yr/50k (Certified+) beyond the factory 3/36k; $0 deductible; 182-point inspection; two free oil changes; roadside assistance; 3-day exchange; SiriusXM trial. Remaining CPO coverage transfers to a subsequent private owner at no charge (notify Honda Care Contract Services); the clock does not reset. Non-CPO used: Honda’s 3/36 and 5/60 factory warranties transfer to any owner with no reduction, so a 2024 with under 20k miles bought in late 2026 will typically have little or no bumper-to-bumper left but 2-3 years of powertrain and 5+ years of hybrid-battery coverage.

Service near Ocean City

  • Dealers within ~45 min: Boardwalk Honda
  • Access rating: 5/5. Brand parts/labor: Lowest RepairPal annual cost of any brand; parts inexpensive and universally stocked.

Used market (Sept 2026)

  • 2023, under 20k mi: $27,000–$31,000
  • 2024, under 20k mi: $29,500–$33,500
  • 2022, under 50k mi: $21,000–$27,000
  • Availability: Very common. CarGurus showed 281 used Accord Hybrids within the New York metro (incl. northern NJ) and 967 2024 Touring Hybrids nationally; sub-20k-mile 2024 Tourings were listed in Jersey City NJ ($30,294 / 14.8k mi), New Rochelle NY ($29,676 / 12.2k), Westminster MD ($32,799 / 10.6k) and a CPO example in Tewksbury MA ($31,487 / 19k). 2025 EX-L Hybrid with 6k miles in Norwalk CT at $30,714. Sub-20k-mile 2023 Tourings are scarce because most 2023s have 30-50k miles; a 44k-mile 2023 Touring was $29,990 at Carvana. Dealer stock in South Jersey / Philadelphia / Delaware should be ample given Honda’s volume, but shop the whole NJ-PA-DE corridor for CPO examples.

Notes: Data gaps: J.D. Power numeric quality/reliability score for 2024 Accord not retrievable (U.S. News and jdpower.com timed out / blocked); Edmunds True Cost to Own page blocked, so five-year figure is RepairPal $400/yr x 5 (CarEdge independently estimates $1,874 for 5 years); tire-set cost ($700) is an approximation from a $160/tire OEM dealer quote for 235/40R19 plus mounting – EX-L’s 17-inch tires will be cheaper; oil change $140 is the midpoint of RepairPal’s $126-155 range. 2023-2025 hybrid trim MSRPs not independently verified (2026 MSRPs used). Ground clearance 5.3 in from CarsGuide; Honda’s own spec release was not fetchable. Price bands are inferred from CarGurus listings observed Sept 2026 (2024 band directly from six sub-20k-mile Touring listings; 2023 and 2022 bands inferred from year averages and are lower-confidence). Car and Driver and MotorTrend pages could not be fetched; reviewer summary draws on Edmunds, Consumer Reports, KBB, The Autopian and AutoGuide.

Hyundai Sonata

Years in scope: 2024, 2025
Segment: mid-size

Fit for Mom: On the two things this buyer weighs most – softness and hush – the refreshed Sonata scores best of the three: reviewers use words like ‘cushy,’ ‘Lexus-like’ and ‘one of the quietest non-luxury sedans,’ the hybrid uses a normal 6-speed automatic rather than a droning CVT, and the driver sits noticeably high for a low sedan, which helps entry. The compromise is the back seat: 34.8 in of rear legroom is 6 in short of the Accord’s and the coupe roof clips headroom, so if she regularly carries tall adults in back the Accord wins on space; the 16 cu ft trunk with its wide opening is excellent. Ownership cost is low on paper (RepairPal $458/yr, Edmunds $3,870 over 5 years) and a sub-20k-mile 2024-2025 Hybrid Limited at $30-33k or an SEL at $22-27k sits comfortably in budget, but Consumer Reports rates the 2024-2025 Sonata HYBRID below average for reliability while praising the gas car – so the safest recipe is either a gas SEL/SEL Convenience, or a Hybrid Limited bought as Hyundai CPO so the 10-yr/100k powertrain warranty comes with it.

Target trims

Trim Years MSRP new Powertrain Fuel MPG Heated Ventilated Htd wheel Sunroof Screen Wireless CarPlay 360 cam Leather

SEL 2024–2025 $27,500 2.5L I-4, 191 hp, 8-speed automatic, FWD (HTRAC AWD optional on SEL and SEL Convenience) regular 29 yes no no none 12.3 yes none cloth

Size and entry

  • Length 193.3 in, wheelbase 111.8 in
  • Rear legroom 34.8 in, front headroom 40.0 in, trunk 16.0 cu ft
  • Seat height / ground clearance: 5.3 in. Low coupe-profile sedan: 56.9 in tall, 5.3 in ground clearance, no published hip point. Front headroom 40.0 in without sunroof (SEL) / 38.4 in with the panoramic roof (Limited, N Line); rear headroom 37.8 / 37.4 in. Rear legroom 34.8 in is the shortest of the three cars (Accord 40.8, K5 35.2); KBB calls it ‘a notable weakness’ but ‘not necessarily a deal-breaker,’ Cars.com says two adults fit well but 6-footers ‘feel the pinch of the sloping roofline.’ One positive for an older driver: The Truth About Cars found the driver’s seat ‘lacked sufficient downward adjustment,’ i.e., it sits relatively high in the car, and passenger seat-height adjustment is standard. KBB praises the trunk’s ‘wide aperture that makes loading and unloading so easy.’ Trunk 16.0 cu ft gas and hybrid per Hyundai (The Car Connection lists 15.6).

Comfort

  • Ride: soft. Cabin: very quiet.
  • Reviewers: The Sonata is the comfort-first car of this trio. Autoweb: the base and hybrid Sonatas are ‘comfort-focused, easy-to-drive sedans with cushy, quiet rides’ and the engine is ‘quieter than the Toyota’s when it gets to work,’ delivering ‘stylish serenity.’ The Truth About Cars called the 2024 Hybrid Limited ‘one of the quietest, smoothest non-luxury sedans’ it had driven and said it ‘felt Lexus-like,’ with a supple ride. Edmunds owners and its expert review describe ‘a very quiet ride’ and a suspension that ‘absorbs impacts well without being overly floaty,’ though Edmunds notes the front-seat padding ‘is a bit stiff’ on long trips and TTAC found the driver’s seat sits high. KBB: ‘prioritizes comfort over sportiness… an agreeable experience overall.’ Avoid the N Line, whose sport suspension gives a ‘sometimes choppy ride’ (Cars.com).

Reliability

  • Consumer Reports: CR splits sharply by powertrain: the 2024 gas Sonata is ‘more reliable than other cars from the same model year’ and the 2025 gas Sonata ‘much more reliable,’ but the 2024 AND 2025 Sonata Hybrid are both rated ‘less reliable than other cars from the same model year.’ CR counts 1 NHTSA recall on the 2024. Auto Reliability Index: 2024 73/100, 2025 76/100.
  • J.D. Power: 81. RepairPal: 4.0/5
  • Notable issues/recalls: Hyundai Recall 267 (2024 Sonata): brake-light software can make brake lights flash instead of illuminating steadily; fixed by dealer or OTA software update (letters Sept 2024).; 2025-2026 Sonata: software error can blank the instrument-panel display (speedometer/warning lights); dealer software update.; Consumer Reports flags below-average reliability for the 2024-2025 Sonata Hybrid specifically (not the gas car); no single widespread hybrid defect was identified in the sources retrieved.; RepairPal common Sonata complaints (all generations): parking lights that stay on (cabin fuse box), transmission shift faults from failed speed sensors – mostly older cars.; The 2011-2019 Theta-II engine failures and 2011-2021 theft-immobilizer issue do NOT apply to 2024-2025 cars (Smartstream 2.5 / push-button start).

Ownership cost

  • Annual maintenance + repair: $458; 5-year: $3,870
  • Oil change ~n/a; tire set ~n/a; premium fuel: no
  • Insurance: No verified premium figures found. The 2021-and-earlier Hyundai theft/immobilizer premium spike does not apply (all 2024-2025 Sonatas have push-button start and immobilizers). Expect ordinary midsize-sedan premiums; the Hybrid Limited’s higher MSRP and hybrid components may cost slightly more to insure than an SEL. Hyundai also includes 3 years/36k of complimentary scheduled maintenance on new cars (2020+), but that benefit is for the original retail buyer and does not transfer to a used purchase.

Warranty and CPO

  • Factory: 5/60k basic, 10/100k for the ORIGINAL owner only; 5/60k (from original in-service date) for a second owner unless bought as Hyundai CPO. Hybrid battery: lifetime for original owner, 10/100k for subsequent owners. powertrain
  • CPO: Hyundai Certified Pre-Owned: multipoint inspection; reinstates the 10-yr/100,000-mile powertrain warranty from the original in-service date (with a $50 deductible per visit that the factory warranty does not have); buyer also gets the remainder of the 5-yr/60k new-vehicle limited warranty; 10-yr/unlimited-mile roadside assistance from in-service date; travel-breakdown and rental-car reimbursement; CARFAX report. Non-CPO used: the 5/60k bumper-to-bumper, 7-yr anti-perforation and 5-yr roadside transfer automatically, but powertrain coverage drops to 5/60k. As with the Kia, a CPO example is worth paying for because it doubles the powertrain term and matters most on the hybrid, where CR reliability is weaker. CPO age/mileage eligibility (commonly cited as under 5 years old and under 60,000 miles) was not confirmed from a Hyundai document – ask the dealer.

Service near Ocean City

  • Dealers within ~45 min: Sport Hyundai
  • Access rating: 5/5. Brand parts/labor: Low parts and labor costs comparable to Kia; same second-owner powertrain-warranty catch.

Used market (Sept 2026)

  • 2023, under 20k mi: $20,000–$24,500
  • 2024, under 20k mi: $22,500–$32,500
  • 2022, under 50k mi: $16,500–$22,000
  • Availability: Plentiful. CarGurus (Sept 2026): 3,558 used 2024 Sonatas nationally averaging $22,152 (prices down ~10% year over year), 301 within the New York metro. The 2024 band spans the two target trims: 2024 SEL under 20k miles about $22.5-25k (e.g., 18,002 mi Chicago $22,795), 2024 Hybrid Limited under 20k miles $30,050-32,140 – including one at 10,551 mi in Egg Harbor Township NJ ($32,140), 15 minutes from Ocean City, plus Yorkville NY $31,874 / 10.6k and Lexington SC $30,050 / 16.9k. 2025 Hybrid Limited under 9k miles: $30,312 (Bohemia NY), $32,263 (GA), $32,799 (Millsboro DE). 2025 SEL under 14k miles $25-27k. 2023 (pre-refresh, out of scope) shown for reference: CPO 2023 SEL 16-19k mi $20.2-20.4k in Denville NJ / Stamford CT; 2023 Limited 17.9k mi $24,469 Bohemia NY. Hybrid Limiteds are a small share of listings (47 2024 Hybrid Limiteds nationally on CarGurus) so expect to travel within NJ/PA/DE for a CPO one.

Notes: Data gaps: Hyundai’s 2024 spec PDF returned no content, so dimensions come from The Car Connection / dealer spec pages and KBB (rear legroom 34.8, trunk 16.0 vs 15.6 conflict noted); 2025 MSRPs for the Hybrid Limited and SEL Convenience not verified (2024 figures used for Limited; 2025 gas SEL from Cars.com); memory seat on Limited and wireless CarPlay on 2024 Limited not confirmed from a Hyundai document; combined mpg for Limited Hybrid (47) and SEL (29) rely on secondary sources / inference from city-hwy figures – confirm on window sticker. RepairPal’s oil-change estimator returned an implausible $347-376 for the Sonata, so oil-change cost is null; tire-set cost null (SEL 17-inch, Limited Hybrid 17-inch per most listings; no priced source). Insurance figures unavailable. KBB’s 2025 trim prices ($24,900 SE etc.) conflicted with Cars.com and Hyundai’s pattern and were disregarded. Edmunds 5-year figure ($3,355 maintenance + $515 repairs) assumes 15k mi/yr; at this buyer’s low mileage the real number will be lower (CarEdge estimates $2,048). Price bands from CarGurus listings observed Sept 2026; the 2023 band refers to the pre-refresh car and is for reference only. Car and Driver, MotorTrend, Edmunds trim pages, and Hyundai’s own CPO page were not fetchable.

Kia K5

Years in scope: 2023, 2024, 2025
Segment: mid-size

Fit for Mom: The K5 is the value play: a sub-20k-mile 2024-2025 EX lands around $23-28k, leaving $10k+ of budget unspent, and the 2025 EX bundles ventilated seats, panoramic roof, heated wheel, memory seat and a 360 camera that the Accord only offers on the $39k Touring. The catch for this buyer is packaging: 35.2 in of rear legroom is the tightest of the three, the fastback roof trims headroom, and the seating position is low; reviewers call the ride ‘on the firm side’ but composed and the cabin quiet enough to compare to luxury sedans. The GT-Line should be treated as a styling trim – sport seats, black trim, optional red interior, no ventilated seats – and the EX is the one that reads as a comfortable car. Ownership cost is fine but less proven than Honda’s (RepairPal has no K5-specific data; Edmunds estimates $5,277 in 5-year maintenance and repairs), and buying Kia CPO matters more here than with the Accord because it restores the 10-yr/100k powertrain warranty that otherwise drops to 5/60k for a second owner.

Size and entry

  • Length 193.1 in, wheelbase 112.2 in
  • Rear legroom 35.2 in, front headroom 40.2 in, trunk 16.0 cu ft
  • Seat height / ground clearance: 5.3 in. Low, fastback-style sedan: 56.9 in overall height, 5.3 in ground clearance; no published hip point. Front headroom drops from 40.2 in (no sunroof: LXS/GT-Line) to 38.4 in with the panoramic roof (EX); rear headroom 37.8 / 37.4 in. Cars.com and Consumer Reports both flag ‘limited rear headroom’ from the sloping roofline. Rear legroom (35.2 in) is 5.6 in less than the Accord’s, though KBB says the back seat is ‘much roomier than the spec sheet might suggest.’ Trunk 16.0 cu ft on 2023-2024 (Kia Media) and 15.6 on 2025 (Kia Media / KBB) – both ‘among the roomiest in the class’ per KBB.

Comfort

  • Ride: balanced. Cabin: quiet.
  • Reviewers: Consumer Reports’ 2025 road test says the ride ‘is on the firm side, meaning passengers will be aware of most pavement flaws, yet the car remains comfortable, composed,’ and that the K5 ‘is relatively quiet in terms of road and wind noise, but the engine can get a bit raspy when pressed hard.’ Edmunds’ 2026 rating test found the K5 ‘as silent on the highway as some luxury sedans’ with front seats that stay comfortable over several hours, and Cars.com describes a ‘smooth and controlled ride.’ KBB calls it ‘not overly firm’ with ‘more poise and immediacy’ than the comfort-first Sonata, and says Kia cabins ‘feel more like luxury cars than mainstream.’ The Sonata sibling is the softer of the two Korean sedans; the K5 leans slightly sportier.

Reliability

  • Consumer Reports: CR rates the 2025 K5 ‘much more reliable than other cars from the same model year’ (2 NHTSA recalls) and notes 2 recalls on the 2024. Auto Reliability Index scores 2024 at 77/100 and 2025 at 79/100 with fewer complaints on 2024+ cars. KBB owner data: 77% of 2025 owners recommend, with styling and comfort the strongest features; some owners report transmission, brake and infotainment complaints.
  • J.D. Power: 85. RepairPal: n/a/5
  • Notable issues/recalls: NHTSA SC346 (2023-2025 K5, ~100,000 cars): left/right rear window trim may loosen and detach, creating a road hazard; owner letters Sept 2026 – likely still open on used examples, confirm remedy done.; NHTSA SC356 (2021-2024 K5): damaged fuel-tank check valve can let air in, tank expands and can contact hot exhaust and melt, fuel leak risk; letters Jan 2026.; 2025 K5 (built Feb 2024-Apr 2025): parking lamp issue recall.; Earlier 2021-2022 K5 recalls not in scope. RepairPal lists 9 K5 recalls total.; Consumer complaints (KBB, k5owners forum) cluster around 8-speed transmission shift quality and infotainment glitches; no widespread mechanical failure pattern on 2023+ cars found.

Ownership cost

  • Annual maintenance + repair: $474; 5-year: $5,277
  • Oil change ~n/a; tire set ~n/a; premium fuel: no
  • Insurance: No verified premium figures found. Note that the 2021-2022 Kia theft/immobilizer problem that raised premiums on older Kias does not apply: all K5s have push-button start with an engine immobilizer. Expect ordinary midsize-sedan premiums; Kia parts pricing is somewhat higher than Honda per RepairPal brand data ($474/yr Kia average vs $428 Honda).

Warranty and CPO

  • Factory: 5/60k basic, 10/100k for the ORIGINAL owner only; drops to 5/60k (from original in-service date) for a second owner unless bought as Kia CPO powertrain
  • CPO: Kia Certified Pre-Owned: 165-point inspection; restores the full 10-yr/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty measured from the original in-service date; adds 1-yr/12,000-mile Platinum (comprehensive) coverage; 10-yr roadside assistance from in-service date; travel-breakdown and rental reimbursement; CARFAX report. The CPO powertrain warranty is fully transferable to later owners. Non-CPO used: the 5/60k basic, 5/100k anti-perforation and roadside plan transfer, but the 10/100k powertrain does NOT – a second owner gets 5/60k powertrain. For this buyer, a Kia CPO example is worth a premium because it converts a 5-yr/60k powertrain into 10-yr/100k. CPO age/mileage eligibility limits were not confirmed from a Kia document (dealers commonly cite current + 5 model years and under 60k miles) – ask the dealer.

Service near Ocean City

  • Dealers within ~45 min: Matt Blatt Kia
  • Access rating: 5/5. Brand parts/labor: Inexpensive parts and labor; powertrain warranty is the draw but only at full strength via CPO or as original owner.

Used market (Sept 2026)

  • 2023, under 20k mi: $22,000–$27,000
  • 2024, under 20k mi: $22,500–$27,500
  • 2022, under 50k mi: $17,500–$23,000
  • Availability: Common but skewed toward GT-Line and LXS; low-mile EX examples are the scarce ones. CarGurus (Sept 2026): 2,775 used 2024 K5s nationally averaging $25,162; 2023 average $23,220; 2022 average $20,262. Sub-20k-mile examples seen: 2024 GT-Line AWD 7,822 mi in Wall Township NJ $22,794; 2024 GT-Line AWD 6,228 mi Omaha $23,749; 2024 GT-Line FWD CPO 9,913 mi Yonkers NY $25,570; 2023 EX ~11.5k mi at $27,795-28,392 (Cars.com listings, date not confirmed). 200 used K5s listed within the New York metro; Wall Township and Totowa NJ dealers had sub-20k examples. Sub-20k-mile 2025 K5s (new-generation 2.5L, 12.3-inch screen) were $23.8-27.7k on CarGurus and may be the smarter buy for this buyer since the 2025 EX bundles ventilated seats/sunroof/360 camera as standard.

Notes: Data gaps: RepairPal has insufficient K5-specific data (annual figure shown is the Kia brand average $474); RepairPal’s oil-change estimator returned an implausible $450-479 for the K5 (parts ~$389), so oil-change cost is null – expect a normal 4-cylinder synthetic oil change; tire-set cost null (EX uses 235/45R18, GT-Line 18-19 in; no priced source retrieved). Whether the 2023-2024 EX Premium Package includes the panoramic sunroof and ventilated seats is reported widely but not confirmed from Kia Media (only heated wheel, Bose and safety items were confirmed) – verify per VIN. Wireless CarPlay on the 2025 12.3-inch screen not confirmed from a Kia document. Trunk: Kia lists 16.0 cu ft for 2023-2024 and 15.6 for 2025 (schema value uses 2023-2024). Price bands inferred from CarGurus listings observed Sept 2026; 2023 EX band is lower-confidence because few sub-20k-mile 2023 EX listings were found. J.D. Power score 85 is the 2024 predicted-reliability figure as reported by U.S. News. Car and Driver, MotorTrend, Edmunds trim pages, and Kia’s own kia.com pages could not be fetched.

Lexus ES 350

Years in scope: 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025
Segment: mid-size luxury

Fit for Mom: The ES 350 is the closest thing on sale to a modern town car: reviewers uniformly describe it as plush, isolated and exceptionally quiet, with 39.2 in of rear legroom and a 13.9 cu ft trunk. It is the low-risk pick on ownership cost - regular fuel, RepairPal $468/yr, CarEdge ~$1,961 for the first five years, 6yr/70k powertrain warranty plus L/Certified 2yr/unlimited-mile coverage. A 2023-2024 Luxury or Ultra Luxury under 20k miles lands squarely in the $37-48k budget; the Ultra Luxury adds the 360 camera and kick-sensor trunk that suit an older driver. Main cautions: it is a low-ish sedan (no elevated hip point), the touchpad/infotainment is fussy, and F Sport examples should be avoided for their firmer ride.

Target trims

Size and entry

  • Length 195.9 in, wheelbase 113.0 in
  • Rear legroom 39.2 in, front headroom 37.5 in, trunk 13.9 cu ft
  • Seat height / ground clearance: not published. Conventional low-ish sedan (56.9 in overall height); cars.com lists ground clearance as N/A and no published hip-point figure was found (set null). Lexus’ ES launch materials state the hip point, sill height, seat-to-B-pillar gap and seat-bolster softness were tuned so stepping in and out is ‘smooth and comfortable’; one ClubLexus owner nonetheless calls it ‘a bit low-slung for easy entry/exit.’ Wide door openings and a flat, softly bolstered seat help; expect a modest sit-down rather than a step-in.

Comfort

  • Ride: soft. Cabin: very quiet.
  • Reviewers: Edmunds: the compliant suspension ‘is adept at soaking up bumps in the road and the seats offer effective support for long drives’; the cabin ‘is quiet and loaded with features even in base form.’ Consumer Reports calls the ES ‘one of the most comfortable and plush-riding cars in recent memory’ with an ‘extremely hushed cabin’ that ‘absorbs bumps very well and yet the body stays composed,’ faulting only the fussy touchpad controls. Cars.com describes it as ‘astonishingly isolated… like a full-size limousine’ with ‘copious sound insulation’ and cushy rather than firm front seats; The Torque Report says ‘the ES is downright silent.’

Reliability

  • Consumer Reports: CR: the ES ‘has done well in Consumer Reports’ road tests, reliability surveys, and owner satisfaction questionnaires’; 2024 overview praises the absorbent ride and quiet, luxurious cabin, with ‘fussy controls’ the main demerit. Numeric predicted-reliability score is behind CR’s paywall (not captured).
  • J.D. Power: 83. RepairPal: 4.0/5
  • Notable issues/recalls: NHTSA 23V865 (2020-2022 ES 350): Occupant Classification System sensor short circuit may disable front passenger airbag; dealer inspects/replaces sensor free. Final owner letters mailed through Jan 2026 - confirm remedy completed on any 2022 example.; Toyota 24TA01 / NHTSA 2024 recall (2023-2024 ES 350 with Panoramic View Monitor): rearview camera image may be delayed after shifting to reverse; parking-assist ECU software update, free.; No widespread mechanical issues reported for the 3.5L V6 / 8-speed on this generation; RepairPal lists 0 reported problems for 2023 ES 350 and a 6% probability that a repair is severe (segment avg 12%).

Ownership cost

  • Annual maintenance + repair: $468; 5-year: $1,961
  • Oil change ~$200; tire set ~n/a; premium fuel: no
  • Insurance: Mid-size luxury sedan with ~$42-51k MSRP and top safety ratings; premiums should sit well below the LS 500 and roughly in line with or slightly above the Acura TLX. No model-specific insurance dollar figure was captured (Edmunds TCO pages returned 403).

Warranty and CPO

  • Factory: 4/50k basic, 6/70k powertrain
  • CPO: L/Certified by Lexus: 2 years / unlimited miles of basic + powertrain coverage beginning when the 4yr/50k new-car warranty expires (or from certification if already expired), so a 2023 could be covered into 2029; no deductible; eligibility = current model year plus six prior model years and under 80,000 miles; 161-point inspection; next 4 factory-recommended services free for 2 yrs/20k miles; roadside assistance, trip-interruption (3 nights / $200 per night cap) and loaner-car benefits. Transferability to a later private buyer was not confirmed in fetched sources - ask the dealer. Includes 2 complimentary new-car maintenance visits only if still within 12 months/10k miles.

Service near Ocean City

  • Dealers within ~45 min: Lexus of Atlantic City
  • Access rating: 4/5. Brand parts/labor: Toyota reliability with luxury-tier dealer labor rates; parts moderately priced, many shared with Toyota.

Used market (Sept 2026)

  • 2023, under 20k mi: $35,000–$45,000
  • 2024, under 20k mi: $37,000–$48,000
  • 2022, under 50k mi: $31,000–$43,000
  • Availability: Very common in the NJ/PA/DE market - the ES is Lexus’ best-selling sedan and NJ has a dense dealer network (Ray Catena Monmouth, Lexus of Cherry Hill, Atlantic City area). CarGurus (Sept 2026) shows ~1,071 used 2024 ES listings nationally (avg $42,302, prices up 2.1% YoY) and ~928 used 2022 listings (avg $35,491). Edmunds lists a 2023 ES 350 average of $39,285 in Edison NJ with average mileage ~13,900. Bands: 2024 base ~15.8k mi at $37,822; Luxury ~23k mi $46,687; Ultra Luxury ~21k mi $47,584 (one 8.7k-mi UL asked $57k - outlier). 2023: base low-mile examples ~$35-40k (e.g., 6.9k mi at $40,495), Ultra Luxury low-mile ~$43-45k. 2022 under 50k: base ~43k mi $32,529; Ultra Luxury 29k mi $43,512. F Sport listings are common - filter them out. Bands are derived from these listings, not a formal valuation.

Notes: Data gaps: ground clearance / seat height not published by cars.com or dealer spec pages (null); wireless CarPlay set false based on generation-level knowledge - verify; Luxury-trim heated/ventilated seats and memory are stated by Lexus configurator but the fetched dealer pages only describe them generically, so confirm on the specific car’s Monroney. J.D. Power 83/100 is the 2022 VDS figure cited by a dealer page (a later study cited 87/100); jdpower.com blocked fetches. Edmunds True Cost to Own and Consumer Reports numeric scores were behind 403/paywall; CarEdge 5-year figure ($1,961) covers maintenance+repairs years 1-5 and is lower than RepairPal’s annualized $468 because early years are warranty-covered. Tire set cost left null: SimpleTire lists $79-$253 per tire in the 215/55R17 (base) size; Luxury uses 18-in, F Sport 19-in. ES 300h hybrid variant: same body, 44 mpg combined, RepairPal $524/yr - reasonable alternative if one turns up at the right price, but not the target. Cars.com MSRPs exclude destination (~$1,150); Rallye Lexus figures include it.

Lexus LS 500

Years in scope: 2020, 2021, 2022
Segment: large luxury

Fit for Mom: On comfort and silence the LS is the benchmark - 123-in wheelbase, 17 cu ft trunk, near-silent cabin and ‘sublime’ ride, especially with the air-suspension Luxury Package whose access mode raises the car for entry. But it only fits the $45k ceiling as a 2020-2021 base car with 55-80k miles, which means a twin-turbo V6 on premium fuel, 19-20-in tires, and a flagship’s parts prices, largely outside the 6yr/70k powertrain warranty; an L/Certified example (2 yrs unlimited miles) is the only sensible way to buy one. The car is also long (206 in), low (57 in tall) and its Remote Touch infotainment is widely criticized. Best treated as an aspirational alternative if a certified, well-documented 2021 appears under $45k; otherwise the ES delivers most of the serenity at far lower risk.

Size and entry

  • Length 206.1 in, wheelbase 123.0 in
  • Rear legroom 38.9 in, front headroom 37.0 in, trunk 17.0 cu ft
  • Seat height / ground clearance: 5.8 in. Ground clearance 147 mm (5.8 in) per CarsGuide/Cardekho spec sheets; overall height only 57.0 in, so the roofline is low and the doors are long - it is a low, wide flagship rather than a tall-hip-point car. Air-suspension cars (Luxury/Executive packages) automatically raise the body when a door is opened to make stepping in/out easier (Lexus pressroom). Rear seat: AutoGuide notes you ‘sit on them rather than in them.’ Front seats: ‘off the charts’ comfort (CarPro). Very long car (206 in) for tight Ocean City parking.

Comfort

  • Ride: soft. Cabin: very quiet.
  • Reviewers: AutoGuide: ‘You could be doing 30 mph in the city or 70 on the highway and yet the cabin remains as quiet as a Japanese prayer hall’; front ‘seat comfort… is impeccable.’ CarPro: ‘The LS 500’s smooth ride and drive is sublime and relaxing… a supremely quiet ride.’ CarsDirect (2022) finds wind and road noise nearly undetectable but calls the steel-spring ride ‘slightly wallowy’ and says the optional air suspension is ‘advisable’; the 2021 update added foam to armrests/cushions and softened spring rates specifically for comfort.

Reliability

  • J.D. Power: n/a. RepairPal: n/a/5
  • Notable issues/recalls: NHTSA 20V682 (2018-2020 LS 500) and 20V012: low-pressure in-tank fuel pump may fail causing engine stall; pump module replaced free. Confirm completion on any 2020.; NHTSA 24V275 (2020 LS 500 per RepairPal): front passenger airbag may be disabled (Occupant Classification System); inspect/replace free.; 2018-2021 LS 500 with Executive Package: front passenger seat internal interference can make the OCS sensor misread occupant; recall remedy free.; NHTSA 22V239 (2021-2022 LS 500h hybrid only): Skid Control ECU software may not re-enable VSC after restart; software update.; NHTSA complaint volume is very low (School of Motors: 2020 = 0 complaints, 2021 = 1 resolved). Known cost items: A/C compressor $1,399-$1,758, evaporator core $1,836-$2,371 (RepairPal estimates) - air suspension components on Luxury/Executive cars are an additional out-of-warranty exposure.

Ownership cost

  • Annual maintenance + repair: $551; 5-year: n/a
  • Oil change ~$200; tire set ~n/a; premium fuel: yes
  • Insurance: Highest of the three: $76-113k original MSRP flagship with expensive body panels and electronics; expect materially higher comprehensive/collision premiums than an ES or TLX even at a $45k purchase price. No model-specific dollar figure captured.

Warranty and CPO

  • Factory: 4/50k basic, 6/70k powertrain
  • CPO: L/Certified by Lexus: 2 years / unlimited miles basic + powertrain from expiry of the 4yr/50k new-car warranty (or from certification if already expired); no deductible; eligibility = current model year plus six prior (2020 is the oldest eligible year in 2026 and ages out for MY2027 certification) and under 80,000 miles; 161-point inspection; 4 factory services free for 2yr/20k; roadside, trip interruption, loaner. For a 2020-2021 LS the new-car warranty has already expired, so L/Certified would give 2 years from purchase - the single most important protection for a twin-turbo flagship bought used. Transferability not confirmed in fetched sources.

  • 2024, under 20k mi: n/a
  • 2022, under 50k mi: $52,000–$63,000
  • Availability: Thin market: CarGurus (Sept 2026) shows only ~98 used 2020, ~103 used 2021 and ~112 used 2022 LS listings nationwide; NJ/PA/DE examples exist (Ray Catena, Lexus of Cherry Hill area) but expect to travel or ship. Averages: 2020 $45,736 (range $39,489-$57,584), 2021 $51,957, 2022 $59,842 (range $50,933-$66,599); Edmunds values a 2022 at $44,588-$63,766. UNDER $45k: yes, but only 2020-2021 base LS 500 with roughly 55,000-80,000 miles (e.g., 2020 RWD 56.9k mi $39,489; 2020 RWD 77.5k mi $42,664; 2021 RWD 67k mi $45,113). Sub-40k-mile 2020-2021 cars run $46-58k; 2022 under 50k miles $52-63k - over budget. 2023/2024 bands are null because those years are out of scope and well above $45k.

Notes: Data gaps: RepairPal has insufficient LS500-specific data (brand-level 4.0/5 and $551/yr used for annual cost; repairpal_rating null); CarEdge LS maintenance page did not return figures (five-year null); Consumer Reports LS reliability shows ‘No Data Available’ behind paywall; jdpower.com blocked (null). Tire set cost null - SimpleTire shows ~$110-$270 per tire in 245/45R20 and industry guides note 20-in sizes carry a 20-30% premium; base 19-in size is P245/50R19. Front headroom listed as 37 in (cars.com) / 947 mm (~37.3 in). Ground clearance converted from 147 mm. Edmunds review/TCO pages returned 403. The LS 500h hybrid (354 hp, 28 mpg, premium) is the only other variant; it was much more expensive new ($113k in 2022) and is rare used.

Nissan Maxima

Years in scope: 2022, 2023
Segment: large

Fit for Mom: The Maxima is quiet, well-equipped (ventilated seats, panoramic roof, 360 camera standard on Platinum) and inexpensive on the used market, but it is fundamentally a low, midsize-interior ‘four-door sports car’: 34.2 in rear legroom, a 56.5-in roof that CR says ‘inhibits access’, a fixed-height passenger seat and a firm-ish ride. That is the wrong shape for someone who wants Town Car ease of entry and lounge-like space. It also requires premium fuel and pairs a V6 with a CVT, which is fine in this generation but is the component to insure against with Nissan’s 7/100k CPO coverage. Ownership cost is otherwise low (RepairPal $540/yr, $145-173 oil changes) and Nissan dealers are everywhere near Ocean City. Best treated as a budget fallback, not a primary pick.

Size and entry

  • Length 192.8 in, wheelbase 109.3 in
  • Rear legroom 34.2 in, front headroom 38.0 in, trunk 14.3 cu ft
  • Seat height / ground clearance: 5.3 in. Low sedan. Overall height only 56.5 in with a fast, coupe-like roofline; reviewers and Consumer Reports note ‘the low roofline inhibits access and visibility’, the driving position is ‘decidedly sporty’, and the passenger seat bottom height is fixed (only the driver’s seat has height adjustment). Front headroom is 38.0 in on SR/Platinum (39.1 in on the SV without the panoramic roof). Rear legroom 34.2 in and 35.8 in rear headroom are midsize-car numbers, and only shorter adults fit the rear center seat. Front hip room 54.2 in. No published hip-point height; expect a bend-and-drop entry, the opposite of a Town Car.

Comfort

  • Ride: balanced. Cabin: quiet.
  • Reviewers: Edmunds credits the Maxima’s quiet cabin, ‘a joint effort involving acoustic glass, ample sound-deadening materials and active noise cancellation’, for a premium feel, and owners describe the seats as among the most comfortable they have sat in. KBB calls the suspension ‘composed yet forgiving’ and the front Zero Gravity seats road-trip comfortable, while noting the interior is midsize-car sized and the CVT ‘is never going to be as responsive’ as a geared automatic. Consumer Reports is harsher: ‘the ride is too stiff for a sedan that costs $40,000’ and it is neither a convincing sport sedan nor a convincingly luxurious large sedan.

Reliability

  • Consumer Reports: CR’s numeric predicted-reliability and owner-satisfaction scores for 2023 are paywalled (owner satisfaction shows ‘NA’ for 2023 due to sample size). CR’s model history describes very comfortable, supportive front seats but a low roofline that hurts access and visibility, and its 2023 road test is unenthusiastic on ride and refinement. Third-party summaries report CR reliability around 4/5 for recent Maximas; treat as unverified.
  • J.D. Power: n/a. RepairPal: 4.0/5
  • Notable issues/recalls: RepairPal: 4.0/5 reliability (9th of 32 brands’ full-size cars), avg annual repair cost $540, 0.3 shop visits/yr, 13% severe-repair probability. Most common complaints across generations: low-pressure A/C hose leaking at the crimp (warm air), transmission slipping/hard shifting, and a faulty front-seat wiring harness.; CVT: the 2016-2023 (A36) Maxima uses the Jatco CVT8 (JF017E). Nissan’s worst CVT failures were on 2003-2010 cars (warranty extended to 10 yr/120k) and some 2013-2014 units; the 8th generation is widely reported as much improved and RepairPal logs 0-1 problems per year for 2017-2023 Maximas. Still, a CVT is a sealed high-cost unit (replacement typically several thousand dollars), so fluid service history and a 7/100k CPO or extended warranty matter more than on a geared automatic.; Recalls: NHTSA lists no safety recalls for the 2022 or 2023 Maxima (CarComplaints: 6 NHTSA complaints and 0 recalls for 2022; U.S. News/Asbury report no 2023 recalls).; Premium fuel is required for the 3.5L V6 (owner’s manual/press kit), adding roughly $0.60-0.90/gal versus regular.; Discontinued: production ended August 2023 after a 42-year run; 2023 was the final model year. The VQ35 V6 and CVT8 are shared with the Pathfinder/Murano-era Nissans, Nissan continues parts and dealer support, and Nissan’s dealer network is dense in South Jersey, so service is not a concern; resale is: KBB says a 2023 Maxima lost about 45% ($18,135) in 3 years, in the worst quartile of 2023 sedans.

Ownership cost

  • Annual maintenance + repair: $540; 5-year: $2,700
  • Oil change ~$160; tire set ~n/a; premium fuel: yes
  • Insurance: Moderate. Mainstream Nissan parts pricing and broad dealer/independent support keep premiums in line with other large sedans and below the Volvo; the 300-hp ‘sports sedan’ positioning can nudge rates up slightly versus an Altima/Camry. No model-specific quote data retrieved.

Warranty and CPO

  • Factory: 3/36k basic, 5/60k powertrain
  • CPO: Nissan Certified Pre-Owned: 7-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty (600+ components incl. engine, CVT, drivetrain) measured from the original in-service date; $100 deductible per repair; fully transferable to a subsequent private owner; eligibility up to 6 model years old and under 80,000 miles with a 167-point inspection; 24/7 roadside assistance for the warranty term; rental reimbursement ($42/day, 5 days) and trip-interruption ($500) benefits; CARFAX report; 3-month SiriusXM; KBB also lists 1 year/15,000 miles of prepaid maintenance (dealer pages vary, confirm). A 2023 Maxima stays CPO-eligible until roughly 2029, and CPO examples are currently plentiful in NJ (Matt Blatt Nissan, Egg Harbor Twp; Nissan City, Red Bank).

Service near Ocean City

  • Dealers within ~45 min: Matt Blatt Nissan (formerly Nissan of Atlantic City)
  • Access rating: 5/5. Brand parts/labor: Inexpensive parts and labor; the CVT is the known cost risk on 2013-2020 sedans, which is exactly what the 7/100 CPO warranty covers.

KBB 2023 Platinum fair purchase price $29,100. No 2024 model year exists. Budget note: a sub-20k-mile 2023 Platinum lands near the bottom of her $32-45k range.

Notes: Data gaps: Edmunds spec/TCO pages, Car and Driver, J.D. Power and The Car Connection returned 403; U.S. News timed out; CR scores paywalled. five_year_maintenance_repair_usd is derived (RepairPal $540/yr x 5), not a published 5-year figure; Edmunds TCO would be the better source when accessible. Tire set cost not found (19-in tires on Platinum will cost more than the 18s on SV). Seat height above ground is not published; ground clearance used. Nissan-listed ProPILOT Assist availability on the 2022-2023 Maxima was not confirmed; Intelligent Cruise Control is standard. MSRP sources disagree by ~$200-1,300 for 2023 Platinum depending on destination and paint. SL trim: none in scope (2020 was its last year). Discontinuation: final model year 2023 (production ended Aug 2023); Nissan says parts/service continue; expect weak resale but that already shows in today’s low used prices.

Toyota Avalon

Years in scope: 2022
Segment: large

Fit for Mom: For pure town-car comfort the 2022 Avalon Limited is the best of the three: Consumer Reports calls its ride plusher than most Lexus models and its cabin quiet and lavish, it has the most rear legroom (40.3 in) and biggest trunk (16.1 cu ft), and the Limited already includes ventilated seats, heated wheel, memory, moonroof, HUD and JBL. Ownership cost is low and predictable (RepairPal 4.0/5, ~$463/yr, proven V6, zero recalls on the 2022, J.D. Power’s most dependable 2022 model) and a sub-50k-mile Limited at $31-38k leaves room for a CPO purchase. The two real drawbacks for a 75-year-old are the low stance (CR: ‘hurts ease of access’) and the fact that the car is already 4+ years old with the 3/36 warranty gone, CPO eligibility ending at 6 model years, and thin regional supply. Choose it if a low entry is acceptable and quiet, soft, roomy matters most; choose the Crown if getting in and out is the deciding factor.

Target trims

XLE 2022 $36,825 3.5L V6, 301 hp, 8-speed automatic, FWD (XLE Hybrid: 2.5L hybrid eCVT, 215 hp, 43-44 mpg, MSRP $37,850) regular 26 yes no no optional 9.0 no none leatherette

Size and entry

  • Length 195.9 in, wheelbase 113.0 in
  • Rear legroom 40.3 in, front headroom 37.4 in, trunk 16.1 cu ft
  • Seat height / ground clearance: 5.3 in. Low, long full-size sedan: 5.3 in ground clearance and a conventional low hip point. Consumer Reports states plainly that ‘the car’s low stance hurts ease of access’, and the sleek roofline slightly compromises rear headroom (KBB). Once inside it has the most rear legroom (40.3 in) and largest trunk (16.1 cu ft) of the three. Front headroom 37.4 in (KBB, XLE; moonroof models lose a little). Toyota’s Crown hip point is roughly 4 in higher than a Camry’s, and the Avalon sits at essentially Camry height.

Comfort

  • Ride: soft. Cabin: very quiet.
  • Reviewers: Consumer Reports: ‘Ride comfort is excellent; it is plusher than most Lexus models’ and ‘the cabin is quiet and lavishly furnished, particularly with the Limited trim’, with the low stance as the main ergonomic drawback. KBB: the suspension is tuned so occupants ‘forget that it’s a rough world out there with equally rough road surfaces’; legroom is ‘generous in both rows, with 40.3 inches in the back’; interior ‘spacious, comfortable, well thought-out’. Edmunds/KBB owner reviews repeatedly cite a smooth, controlled, quiet ride and supportive seats; a minority mention wind/road noise and transmission hesitation. Cars.com owners rate it 4.8/5, ‘the very best non-luxury full size 4 door’. Consumer Reports contrasts the Crown’s ride against the Avalon’s plushness, i.e., the Avalon is the softer, quieter car of the two.

Reliability

  • Consumer Reports: CR’s 2022 Avalon page shows predicted reliability and owner satisfaction charts behind the paywall; numeric scores unavailable. The Avalon has a long record of above-average CR reliability. J.D. Power’s 2025 Vehicle Dependability Study (2022 model-year vehicles after 3 years) named the Toyota Avalon the top overall model in the industry.
  • J.D. Power: n/a. RepairPal: 4.0/5
  • Notable issues/recalls: No NHTSA recall campaigns recorded for the 2022 Avalon (recallexplained.com and Cars.com both show zero); only 5 NHTSA complaints on file, mostly tires/wheels; The 2020-2022 Occupant Classification System sensor recall applied to Camry/Camry Hybrid and Lexus ES300h, not the Avalon; still run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls; RepairPal: 4.0/5, ranked 3rd of 12 full-size cars, $463/yr average repair+maintenance, 0.38 unscheduled visits/yr, 13% probability of a severe repair; 3.5L V6 (2GR-FKS) and 8-speed are proven, long-running Toyota units; no hybrid battery to age on the V6

Ownership cost

  • Annual maintenance + repair: $463; 5-year: $2,315
  • Oil change ~$184; tire set ~$800; premium fuel: no
  • Insurance: KBB shows no 5-year cost-to-own for the 2022 Avalon (N/A). As a discontinued full-size Toyota with a modest MSRP it insures similarly to a Camry; expect slightly higher than Camry because of value and V6, but below the Crown. Fuel is the main running-cost penalty vs the hybrids: 25-26 mpg V6 vs 41-47 mpg, though at low annual miles the difference is small (roughly $400-500/yr at 6,000 miles).

Warranty and CPO

  • Factory: 3/36k basic, 5/60k powertrain
  • CPO: Toyota Certified Used Vehicles (Gold tier): eligible up to 6 model years old and under 85,000 miles, 160-point inspection; adds 12-month/12,000-mile comprehensive warranty from CPO purchase plus 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty from original in-service date, $0 deductible, 1 year roadside assistance; transferable at no cost. A 2022 Avalon remains Gold-CPO-eligible only through model-year 2028 on age, so buy CPO now if wanted; original 3/36 basic coverage has already expired on essentially all 2022s and 5/60 powertrain expires by roughly 2027. Avalon Hybrid (2020+) gets hybrid components 8/100k and HV battery 10/150k.

Used market (Sept 2026)

  • 2023, under 20k mi: n/a
  • 2024, under 20k mi: n/a
  • 2022, under 50k mi: $31,000–$38,000
  • Availability: Limited supply because 2022 was the final year and volume was low: CarGurus shows ~102 2022 Limited FWD listings nationwide (avg $28,548, range $19,385-$38,998) and Cars.com only a handful; sub-50k-mile Limiteds observed at $32,398 (22k mi), $32,976 (35k), $33,469 (35k), $34,449 (46k), $35,995 (22k) and $37,998 (16k). Boston-area pricing runs a premium (~$32,700 avg) and the NJ/PA/NY corridor is similar, so expect $31-38k for a clean sub-50k-mile Limited and a $4-6k premium for sub-20k miles. XLE examples run roughly $25-31k (KBB fair purchase $24,400) but lack ventilated seats. Hybrid Limiteds average ~$29,000 per CarGurus. Buyers must be willing to search regionally or ship a car.

_Notes: Data gaps: jdpower.com returned 403, so the numeric Quality & Reliability score is null; the 2025 VDS ‘top overall model’ result comes from search-result text of the J.D. Power press release. Consumer Reports numeric scores are paywalled. Edmunds TCO and KBB 5-year cost to own are unavailable for the 2022 Avalon; annual/5-year maintenance+repair uses RepairPal’s $463/yr (x5). Limited feature list is assembled from KBB’s 2022 Limited page plus dealer/forum trim comparisons (Reliable Toyota, Toyota of Des Moines, toyotanation); Toyota’s pressroom spec page returned 403, so confirm Bird’s Eye View camera and moonroof on the specific car. XLE front headroom (37.4 in, KBB) is used for the model; Limited with moonroof may differ slightly; U.S. News lists rear legroom 40.3 and trunk 16.1. Tire set estimate assumes 235/45R18 at the same $76-290/tire range as the Camry XLE. Combined mpg differs by source (KBB lists 31 for Limited, which appears to be the Hybrid Limited; EPA V6 is 22/32/25-26). Toyota’s own warranty page could not be fetched; 3/36 and 5/60 are Toyota’s standard published terms. price_band_2023 and 2024 are null because the Avalon ended after 2022.

Toyota Camry

Years in scope: 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026
Segment: mid-size

Fit for Mom: The Camry XLE is the lowest-risk, lowest-cost option here: RepairPal 4.0/5 with ~$388/yr average repair+maintenance, regular fuel, cheap 18-inch tires, and huge NJ dealer/CPO supply, so a 2023-2024 XLE under 20k miles lands comfortably at $29-34k with CPO warranty to spare. The 2025+ hybrid XLE is the quieter, more refined car (acoustic glass, better NVH, 47 mpg) and a 2025 with under 20k miles is also inside budget at roughly $31-38k. The trade-offs for a 75-year-old are a low hip point (harder to get in and out of than the Crown) and a merely ‘quiet’ rather than ‘very quiet’ cabin with some engine noise under hard acceleration; rear legroom (38.0 in) and trunk (15.1 cu ft) are adequate but the smallest of the three. Best pick if ownership cost and simplicity outrank easy entry and back-seat space; insist on the XLE (not SE) for the quieter glass and softer seats, and look for the Premium/ventilated-seat package.

Target trims

Trim Years MSRP new Powertrain Fuel MPG Heated Ventilated Htd wheel Sunroof Screen Wireless CarPlay 360 cam Leather

XLE Hybrid (9th generation redesign) 2025–2026 $33,700 2.5L 4-cyl hybrid (5th-gen THS), eCVT, FWD 225 hp (AWD optional 232 hp) regular 47 yes no yes optional 12.3 yes optional leather

Size and entry

  • Length 193.5 in, wheelbase 111.2 in
  • Rear legroom 38.0 in, front headroom 38.3 in, trunk 15.1 cu ft
  • Seat height / ground clearance: 5.4 in. Conventional low mid-size sedan. 2025+ ground clearance 5.4 in (KBB); 2023-2024 gen is 192.1 in long, 5.7 in clearance, same 111.2 wheelbase, 38.0 rear legroom, 38.3 front headroom, 15.1 cu ft trunk. Consumer Reports notes the low stance makes entry/exit ‘a bit difficult’ vs an SUV; CarPro notes large door openings help. Toyota states the Crown’s seating position is ~4 in higher than the Camry’s. Rear headroom 37.6 in (2025, without moonroof); panoramic roof reduces headroom.

Comfort

  • Ride: balanced. Cabin: quiet.
  • Reviewers: Consumer Reports (2025 Camry Hybrid): ride is ‘smooth, comfortable, and controlled’ though on the firm side of plush in SE trim; cabin ‘fairly quiet overall’ except for gas-engine noise under hard acceleration; front cushion feels thin on long drives; rear seat ‘pretty comfortable’. CarPro (2025 XLE AWD): smooth comfortable ride, and the XLE is notably quieter than the SE because of acoustic laminated glass, ‘one of the top reasons’ to buy the XLE; roomy rear seat and plenty of trunk room; seats more cushioned than SE. Consumer Guide (2025 XLE): quiet cabin, comfortable ride, large door openings ease entry, A-grade front seats for big and tall occupants. For 2023-2024 gas XLE, KBB notes it ‘can get a little noisy at freeway speeds’ and the interior looks dated; Cars.com lists ‘comfortable ride’ and ‘roomy backseat’ as pros. Cars.com (2025): NVH ‘remarkably improved’ over the prior hybrid.

Reliability

  • Consumer Reports: 2025 Camry Hybrid: CR overall score 90, road-test score 91, 48 mpg overall in CR testing; CR calls it its top-rated family sedan that ‘rides well, is quiet, and should be very reliable’ (predicted reliability rated above average; exact score paywalled). 2023-2024 gas Camry has a long record of above-average CR reliability (numeric scores paywalled).
  • J.D. Power: n/a. RepairPal: 4.0/5
  • Notable issues/recalls: 23V432000 (2023 Camry/Camry Hybrid): loose wheel lug nuts, possible wheel detachment - inspect/retorque; 24V128000 (2023-2024 Camry/Camry Hybrid): insufficiently welded rear head-restraint brackets, second-row center/right - rear seat-back frame replaced; 25V595000 (2025 Camry, also 2025-2026 Camry Hybrid ~508k units): instrument-panel software may not show speed/brake/TPMS warnings at startup; also could disable turn signals/hazards - OTA software update; NHTSA complaint counts (recallexplained.com): 2023 = 66, 2024 = 46, 2025 = 103 (top 2025 areas: visibility/wipers, seats, structure); RepairPal: 0.28 unscheduled repair visits/yr, 11% probability of a severe repair

Ownership cost

  • Annual maintenance + repair: $388; 5-year: $1,940
  • Oil change ~$146; tire set ~$800; premium fuel: no
  • Insurance: KBB 5-year insurance estimate for 2025 Camry XLE: $20,540 (~$4,100/yr, national assumptions). Camry is among the cheapest mid-size sedans to insure; a 75-year-old low-mileage driver in Ocean City NJ should get a lower quote. Hybrid battery repair risk is covered by Toyota’s 10yr/150k battery warranty on 2025+.

Warranty and CPO

  • Factory: 3/36k basic, 5/60k powertrain
  • CPO: Toyota Certified Used Vehicles (Gold tier): eligible up to 6 model years old and under 85,000 miles, 160-point inspection; adds 12-month/12,000-mile comprehensive warranty from CPO purchase date plus 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty measured from original in-service date, $0 deductible, 1 year roadside assistance; transferable to next owner at no cost. Certified hybrids (2020+): hybrid components 8yr/100k and HV battery 10yr/150k from original first use. Silver tier (older/higher-mile) gets only 12/12k powertrain. New-car terms: 3yr/36k basic, 5yr/60k powertrain, hybrid components 8/100k, hybrid battery 10/150k (2020+), ToyotaCare 2yr/25k free maintenance on new sales only.

Used market (Sept 2026)

  • 2023, under 20k mi: $28,500–$31,500
  • 2024, under 20k mi: $29,000–$34,500
  • 2022, under 50k mi: n/a
  • Availability: Very common in the NJ/PA/DE market; Cars.com nationwide shows hundreds of 2023-2024 XLEs, many at NJ Toyota dealers and CarMax (Wayne NJ, Little Falls NJ, Englewood Cliffs NJ). Sub-20k-mile examples are a minority but findable; many are Toyota CPO. 2025 XLE hybrids with 7k-23k miles were listed at $31,300-$38,749 in NJ/PA (Runnemede, Glen Mills, Malvern, Little Falls), i.e., a nearly-new 2025 XLE hybrid also fits the $32-45k budget.

Notes: Data gaps: J.D. Power numeric Quality & Reliability scores could not be fetched (jdpower.com returned 403); J.D. Power did name the Camry the 2024 IQS highest-ranked midsize car. Edmunds True Cost to Own pages returned 403, so 5-year maintenance/repair uses RepairPal’s $388/yr (x5) with KBB’s 2025 XLE 5-year figure (maintenance $6,631 + repairs $1,667 at 15k mi/yr) and CarEdge’s $1,503 5-year estimate as alternative references. 2025 XLE MSRP varies by source ($33,400 launch / $33,700 Cars.com / $34,925 CarPro-Consumer Guide); 2024 gas XLE $31,170 per two Toyota dealers and KBB (with destination $32,265). Toyota’s own warranty page could not be fetched; 3/36 and 5/60 are Toyota’s standard published terms and hybrid terms come from the CPO sources cited. 2023-2024 dimensions from Toyota of Anaheim spec page; 2025 from KBB. Tire set estimate is 4 x mid-range 235/45R18 (SimpleTire $76-290/tire) plus install. price_band_2022 is null because 2022 is out of scope for this model. 2026 model-year changes not verified; assume carryover of 2025.

Toyota Crown

Years in scope: 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026
Segment: large

Fit for Mom: The Crown is the one sedan here built around the buyer’s biggest physical need: a seat roughly 4 inches higher than a Camry’s with large door openings, which Consumer Reports, Edmunds and KBB all flag as making it easier to get in and out of than almost any sedan. The Limited is standard-AWD, hybrid, 41 mpg on regular fuel, and already includes ventilated seats, heated wheel, panoramic roof, JBL and the 12.3-in screens, and a 2023-2024 Limited under 20k miles should land around $34-41k, inside budget with CPO coverage running to 7yr/100k on the powertrain. Cautions: reviewers rate the ride comfortable but not as pillowy as the Avalon and note the 2.5 hybrid gets buzzy under hard throttle; rear headroom is tight for tall passengers; supply of low-mile examples is thin and depreciation is steep (good for a used buyer, bad at resale); and it is a newer model with three open software recalls, though CR data through 2025 rates it above-average and the most reliable Toyota sedan. Skip the Platinum unless a specific car is priced well, since its 21-inch tires and Hybrid Max add running cost without helping comfort much.

Target trims

Trim Years MSRP new Powertrain Fuel MPG Heated Ventilated Htd wheel Sunroof Screen Wireless CarPlay 360 cam Leather
Limited 2023–2026 $45,950 2.5L 4-cyl hybrid, eCVT, standard electronic AWD, 236 hp regular 41 yes yes yes panoramic 12.3 yes none leather
Platinum 2023–2026 $54,990 2.4L turbo Hybrid Max, 6-speed automatic, AWD, 340 hp regular 30 yes yes yes panoramic 12.3 yes standard leather

Size and entry

  • Length 196.1 in, wheelbase 112.2 in
  • Rear legroom 38.9 in, front headroom 38.2 in, trunk 15.2 cu ft
  • Seat height / ground clearance: 5.8 in. Lifted sedan: Toyota states the Crown’s seating position is about 4.0 in higher than the Camry’s with a hip point of roughly 25 in, and Consumer Reports, Edmunds and KBB all single out easy entry/exit thanks to the elevated seat and large door openings. Ground clearance is still car-like at 5.8 in. Rear legroom 38.9 in is good but the sloping roof limits rear headroom for tall passengers (CR, Cars.com, KBB). Rear headroom figure not verified. Length 196.1 in per KBB and Cars.com (some outlets list 194.0).

Comfort

  • Ride: balanced. Cabin: quiet.
  • Reviewers: Edmunds: ‘excellent ride comfort’, cabin ‘very well insulated against wind and road noise’, and getting in and out ‘is pretty easy’ thanks to the elevated seat and large door openings; the standard 2.5 hybrid is noticeably noisier under hard acceleration than the Hybrid Max. KBB: ‘plush ride quality and well-controlled body movements’ with easier ingress/egress than conventional sedans, though the CVT ‘can drone when you floor the accelerator’. Consumer Reports (road-test score 85): front seats ‘wide, comfortable, and nicely shaped’, rear seat ‘plush’, entry easier than most sedans, and 42 mpg overall on the Limited, but ‘sharp bumps at low speeds tend to punch through’ so it lacks the plushness of the Avalon or Lexus ES, and the four-cylinder is ‘rowdy’ and ‘buzzy’ when pushed. Cars.com: smooth ride, upscale interior, but limited headroom and noticeable engine noise. Owners on Edmunds: ‘exceptional’ ride comfort and very quiet when driven calmly.

Reliability

  • Consumer Reports: CR predicts the 2025 and 2026 Crown will be more reliable than the average new car based on 2023-2025 owner data; forum reports of CR’s March 2025 issue put the Crown at the top of the midsize/large-car reliability category (score ~70, with trim/time-dependent scores of 78-82 reported), making it the most reliable sedan in Toyota’s lineup per those reports. CR road-test score 85. Numeric CR reliability scores are paywalled and the 70/78-82 figures are secondhand (crownforums.com, topspeed.com).
  • J.D. Power: n/a. RepairPal: n/a/5
  • Notable issues/recalls: 24V442000 (2023 Crown): rearview/front camera case laser-weld defect can let water in and short the camera - camera replaced; 24V548000 (2023-2025 Crown, Gulf States Toyota only): inaccurate load-carrying-capacity modification label; 25V595000 (2023-2025 Crown): instrument-panel software may not display speed/brake/TPMS warnings at startup - software update; 25V744000 (2023-2026 Crown): Panoramic View Monitor software error may freeze the rearview camera image - software update; NHTSA complaint counts (recallexplained.com): 2023 = 23, 2024 = 14, 2025 = 0; themes include momentary loss of power when merging from a stop, instrument-panel screen lockups, and unresolved hybrid-system warning lamps; KBB owner reliability rating 5/5 (2023 Limited)

Ownership cost

  • Annual maintenance + repair: $1,656; 5-year: $8,282
  • Oil change ~$146; tire set ~$850; premium fuel: no
  • Insurance: KBB 5-year insurance estimate for 2025 Crown: $21,700 (~$4,340/yr), about 6% more than the Camry ($20,540) on the same assumptions; KBB ranks the Crown in the bottom quartile for cost to own among mid-size cars, driven mainly by depreciation ($19,381/5 yr) rather than maintenance. Platinum’s 21-in tires and Hybrid Max add cost; Limited on 19s is the cheaper-to-run choice.

Certified hybrids (2020+, includes all Crowns): hybrid components 8yr/100k and HV battery 10yr/150k from original first use. New-car terms: 3/36 basic, 5/60 powertrain, hybrid components 8/100k, hybrid battery 10/150k; ToyotaCare 2yr/25k free maintenance on new sales only. Every 2023-2026 Crown is CPO-eligible through at least 2029.

Used market (Sept 2026)

  • 2023, under 20k mi: $34,000–$38,500
  • 2024, under 20k mi: $36,000–$41,000
  • 2022, under 50k mi: n/a
  • Availability: Far less common than Camry: Cars.com showed only about 5 used 2024 Limiteds and 5 used 2023 Limiteds nationally on the first results page, mostly 25k-75k miles; Carfax listed 2024 Limiteds at 19,379 and 19,407 miles (prices not captured). Edmunds/NY-area average for a used 2024 Crown was ~$35,200 at ~33k miles. Expect to search the whole NJ/PA/NY/DE region or wider and to pay a premium for sub-20k-mile cars. Platinum: 2023 examples listed at $38,990-$39,990 (KBB fair purchase $35,200); 2024 Platinum KBB fair purchase $38,000, so a low-mile 2024 Platinum is likely ~$39-44k. Limited price bands: 2023 lowest observed sub-26k-mile listing $36,998 with KBB fair purchase $32,400; 2024 32k-mile listing $39,998, KBB fair purchase $33,700, Cars.com nationwide average $35,514. CarGurus (May 2026) model-year averages: 2023 $34,064, 2024 $36,360, 2025 $39,598.

Notes: Data gaps: RepairPal has no Crown page (404), and jdpower.com returned 403 for numeric scores, so those fields are null. Edmunds True Cost to Own explicitly reports no data for the 2024 Crown Limited; annual/5-year maintenance+repair uses KBB’s 2025 Crown 5-year figures (maintenance $6,548 + repairs $1,734 at 15k mi/yr, so per-year is overstated for a low-mileage senior); CarEdge’s much lower $1,662 5-year estimate is the alternative reference. Oil change figure borrows RepairPal’s Camry 2.5L hybrid estimate ($130-162) since the Limited shares that engine. Tire set estimate is for the Limited’s 225/55R19 (SimpleTire $114-261/tire); Platinum 235/45R21 pricing could not be verified and is expected to be materially higher. Hip point (~25 in) and ‘+4.0 in vs Camry’ come from Toyota pressroom text quoted in search results; the pressroom page itself returned 403. Length is 196.1 per KBB/Cars.com; rear headroom unverified. CR numeric reliability scores are secondhand from forums. Cars.com’s recall page showed 0 recalls for the 2024 Crown, which conflicts with NHTSA campaign data (recallexplained.com, safecarinfo.com); trust the NHTSA-derived list and check the VIN. Toyota’s own warranty page could not be fetched; 3/36 and 5/60 are Toyota’s standard published terms.

Volvo S90

Years in scope: 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025
Segment: mid-size luxury

Fit for Mom: On the road the S90 is the most Town-Car-like car here: 120.5-in wheelbase, 40.4 in of rear legroom, a soft, very quiet ride (softest with the Ultimate’s air suspension) and seats reviewers call among the best in any car, and heavy depreciation puts a 2023 Plus/Ultimate or 2024 Plus with under 20k miles inside her $32-45k budget. The catches are ownership-side: premium fuel is required, oil changes run ~$200-230, luxury-brand parts and insurance cost more, Volvo dealers are sparse near Ocean City, and the S90 has been dropped from the US market after 2025, so resale and dealer familiarity will fade. It is also a low car with a 37.8-in roof line; entry is ‘a bit of a climb’ despite big doors. A CPO 2023-2024 car with air suspension, full dealer history and the Increased Protection plan is the way to buy it; the 13.5 cu ft trunk is the one packaging compromise.

Target trims

Trim Years MSRP new Powertrain Fuel MPG Heated Ventilated Htd wheel Sunroof Screen Wireless CarPlay 360 cam Leather

Size and entry

  • Length 200.4 in, wheelbase 120.5 in
  • Rear legroom 40.4 in, front headroom 37.8 in, trunk 13.5 cu ft
  • Seat height / ground clearance: 5.7 in. Longest car of the three (200.4 in, 120.5-in wheelbase, long-wheelbase body since 2021) but a low, sleek sedan: height 56.6 in, front/rear headroom 37.8 in (panoramic roof), front hip room 56.4 in. What Car: ‘the low seats make getting in and out a bit of a climb, but the large doors mean it’s easy to swing your legs in’; standard power seat-height adjustment on both front seats helps. Rear doors are long and rear legroom (40.4 in) is limousine-grade; the 13.5 cu ft trunk is the smallest here. No published hip-point height.

Comfort

  • Ride: soft. Cabin: very quiet.
  • Reviewers: Edmunds says the S90 ‘leans toward comfort rather than athleticism thanks to its soft ride and very comfortable seats’ and that ‘the cabin stays remarkably quiet at speed’, though bumps are ‘muted rather than amplified’ rather than fully erased; U.S. News notes larger ruts reach the cabin on the standard suspension while the available air suspension ‘provides a gentler ride’. KBB calls it ‘smooth, comfortable, and quiet’, with ‘some of the most comfortable seats you’ll find in any luxury car’ and a ‘supple suspension’, and says the pliant ride and relaxing seats ‘epitomize luxury’. Consensus: the most serene and best-seated car of the three, with the air-suspension Ultimate closest to old-Cadillac float.

Reliability

  • Consumer Reports: CR rates the 2025 S90 ‘about average’ in predicted reliability versus other 2025 cars but publishes no detailed per-year data for 2022-2025 because of small sample size (‘No Detailed Data Available’). Numeric scores are paywalled. What Car’s UK used review of the 2016-2023 S90 flags ‘poor reliability’ in owner surveys, mainly electrical/infotainment; this is the main reputational concern.
  • J.D. Power: n/a. RepairPal: n/a/5
  • Notable issues/recalls: RepairPal does not score the S90 (insufficient data). Volvo brand: 3.5/5, 17th of 32 brands, $769 average annual repair cost; the S90 page cites $522/yr average and common issues of rear-brake-rotor vibration (pads + rotors) and coolant-temperature-sensor failure causing no-start/check-engine.; CarEdge: S90 costs about $3,233 in maintenance and repairs over its first 5 years and $10,013 over 10 years, beating the luxury-sedan average by $664; 12.95% chance of a major repair in 5 years (27.69% in 10).; Recalls 2022-2025 S90 (NHTSA/Cars.com): 25V-282 (May 2025) and 25V-908 (Dec 2025) rearview camera may not display in reverse, software/OTA fix, covers 2022-2025; 22V-793 (Oct 2022) ECM software may prevent engine start, 2022-2023; 25V-104 (Feb 2025) 2025 cars, windows may detach, reinstall; 25V-179 (Mar 2025) 2020-2021 T8 plug-in high-voltage battery short (LG modules; separate 2020-2022 PHEV battery campaign); 2025 T8 PHEV brake-control-module defect, NHTSA advised not to use one-pedal/B mode. The B6 mild hybrid avoids the PHEV battery/brake items.; Known-issue themes on this generation: Sensus (pre-2022) and Google-based infotainment glitches, 12V/48V battery-related warnings, and dealer-only software work; the 48V mild-hybrid system has had scattered fault reports. Most fixes are software; ensure the car has a Volvo dealer service history and all OTA/recall updates.; Premium fuel is REQUIRED: Volvo specifies minimum 91 AKI (93 recommended) for all B4/B5/B6/T8 engines.; Discontinued in the US after the 2025 model year: the US-market S90 is built in China and tariffs led Volvo to cancel it (and the S60), leaving Volvo SUV-only in the US; the refreshed 2025+ global S90 and the electric ES90 are not sold here. Volvo dealers will keep servicing it and parts are shared with the XC90/XC60/V90 (SPA platform, same engines), but fewer dealers exist than for Chrysler/Nissan (closest to Ocean City are in the Cherry Hill/Manasquan/Bridgewater corridor and Delaware) and resale is already soft (CarGurus: 2023 S90 down ~41% from MSRP, prices falling 6-9% in recent months).

Ownership cost

  • Annual maintenance + repair: $769; 5-year: $6,243
  • Oil change ~$214; tire set ~n/a; premium fuel: yes
  • Insurance: Highest of the three. KBB’s 5-year cost-to-own for a 2025 B6 Plus estimates $22,235 of insurance over 5 years (~$4,400/yr, KBB’s generic national profile, not a senior low-mileage NJ quote) versus $4,755 maintenance and $1,488 repairs; luxury-brand parts, AWD and ADAS sensor calibrations push premiums and body-shop bills above the Chrysler/Nissan. Shop quotes with her actual profile.

Warranty and CPO

  • Factory: 4/50k basic, 4/50k powertrain
  • CPO: Certified by Volvo (current program): 12-month/unlimited-mile limited warranty that begins at the later of the 4-yr/50k new-car warranty expiry or the CPO purchase date, covering engine, transmission, drive axle, steering, suspension, brakes, electrical and A/C with $0 deductible; fully transferable at no cost; eligibility under 80,000 miles (age limit not stated; typically ~5-6 model years) with a 170+-point inspection and road test, CARFAX report and Buyback Guarantee; Volvo Roadside Assistance Plus for the certification period incl. trip interruption up to $500; 1-year Volvo Cars app subscription, 3-month SiriusXM. Buyers can add a Volvo Increased Protection plan for up to 5 more years/unlimited miles. Note: older dealer pages still describe the pre-2023 program (5 yr/unlimited from original in-service date, 2 yr roadside), so confirm which applies to a given car. New cars also came with 3 yr/36k complimentary factory scheduled maintenance (KBB), which a 2023-2025 CPO car may still partly carry.

Service near Ocean City

  • Dealers within ~45 min: none found / see brands.md
  • Access rating: 2/5. Brand parts/labor: European parts pricing and a 3.5/5 reliability score; independent Volvo specialists are scarce at the shore, and the nearest dealer is 75 minutes away.

Tire set cost not found (19/20-in tires, expect $1,200+). Trim naming: 2022 = Momentum/Inscription/R-Design; 2023-2024 = Plus/Ultimate; 2025 = Plus/Ultra. Ventilated/massage seats and 360 camera: sources conflict on standard vs Lounge Package by year, so verify per car. Panoramic roof: standard on US cars per Volvo; KBB lists ‘available’. Wireless CarPlay unverified for 2024-2025 (Google-based system got OTA updates). 3-yr/36k complimentary maintenance is per KBB’s 2024 review, not confirmed on Volvo’s site. Discontinuation: 2025 is the final US model year due to China-build tariffs; S60 also gone, Volvo US becomes SUV-only.

Brands: service access, certified programs, and cost

Which brands can be serviced near Ocean City, what each certified pre-owned program adds, what transfers to a second owner, and how the brands rank on yearly repair cost.

Prepared 2026-09-13 for a retired buyer choosing a used sedan. Drive times are estimates from Ocean City via the Garden State Parkway / Route 9 / Black Horse Pike in normal off-season traffic; add 10-20 minutes on summer weekends.

Structured data: data/research_raw/brands.json.

Bottom line

Easy service (franchised dealer 25-30 minutes away, backup within an hour): Toyota, Honda, Kia, Hyundai, Nissan, Chrysler, Cadillac.

Close dealer but thin backup (one dealer at 25 min, next one 65-75 min): Lexus, Acura.

No dealer within an hour: Genesis (nearest is Genesis of Cherry Hill in Marlton, ~70 min; no Hyundai-attached Genesis point anywhere in South Jersey) and Volvo (Volvo of Atlantic City has closed; nearest is Cherry Hill Volvo, ~75 min).

Cost ranking (cheapest to most expensive, RepairPal annual repair + maintenance): Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Acura, Lexus, Chrysler, Genesis (est.), Volvo, Cadillac.

Part 1: Service access

Rating scale: 5 = dealer within ~30 min plus backup within ~60 min; 4 = dealer within ~30 min but next-nearest over 60 min; 3 = nearest 45-60 min; 2 = nearest 60-90 min; 1 = over 90 min.

Genesis footprint, verified

  • Sport Hyundai (Egg Harbor Twp) and Vineland Hyundai (Millville) are Hyundai-only; neither lists Genesis sales or service.
  • Since 2021 Genesis restricts new-vehicle sales and warranty service to Genesis-franchised retailers, so a Hyundai dealer cannot do Genesis warranty work.
  • New Jersey has 10 Genesis retailers (DealerRater directory): Cherry Hill/Marlton, Freehold, Brunswick, Woodbridge, North Plainfield, Denville, Wayne, Mahwah, Englewood, Jersey City. Only Marlton is in South Jersey. KBB’s Genesis service-center lookup for Vineland returns Marlton (28 mi), New Castle DE (33 mi) and Springfield PA (35 mi) as the three closest.
  • Genesis Service Valet (pickup and delivery) is a new-car complimentary-maintenance benefit; do not assume it applies to a used purchase.

Ownership changes to know

Kerbeck Cadillac became Ciocca Cadillac of Atlantic City (June 2021). Boardwalk Acura is now Key Acura of Atlantic City. Nissan of Atlantic City is now Matt Blatt Nissan. Action Hyundai (Millville) now appears as Vineland Hyundai.

Part 2: CPO programs and warranty transfer

Verification note: Genesis and Nissan terms were read directly from the manufacturer pages during this session; Volvo terms were read from an authorized Volvo retailer’s CPO page. The manufacturer pages for the other eight brands blocked automated retrieval, so those entries reflect the currently published program terms and should be confirmed at the cited URL before signing.

The Hyundai / Kia / Genesis catch

All three advertise a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, but it applies only to the original owner. A second owner of a non-CPO car gets 5 years/60,000 miles of powertrain coverage, and the complimentary maintenance (Hyundai and Genesis) does not carry over. Buying through the brand’s CPO program is the only way a used buyer gets the full 10/100 powertrain term. For a 3-year-old car this matters: a non-CPO Hyundai/Kia/Genesis has roughly 2 years of powertrain coverage left; a CPO one has roughly 7.

Part 3: Cost ranking

RepairPal brand-level average annual repair plus maintenance cost (all ages; a 3-year-old car will typically run below these figures, but the order holds). Industry average is $652.

Rank Brand $/yr RepairPal reliability Parts and labor reputation
1 Honda 428 4.0/5, 1st of 32 Lowest annual cost of any brand; parts inexpensive and universally stocked.
2 Toyota 441 4.0/5, 8th Cheapest mainstream parts; widest independent-shop familiarity.
3 Hyundai 468 4.0/5, 4th Low parts and labor; second-owner powertrain-warranty reduction.
4 Kia 474 4.0/5, 3rd Same as Hyundai; full 10/100 powertrain only via CPO.
5 Nissan 500 4.0/5, 9th Cheap parts and labor; CVT is the known risk, which CPO 7/100 covers.
6 Acura 501 4.0/5, 2nd Honda mechanicals with a modest luxury premium on dealer labor.
7 Lexus 551 4.0/5, 7th Toyota reliability at luxury dealer labor rates; many parts shared with Toyota.
8 Chrysler 608 3.5/5, 11th Cheap parts but higher repair frequency; CarEdge’s 5-year figure ($3,565) is the highest of the mainstream brands here.
9 Genesis ~620 (est.) not rated Hyundai-derived parts, but warranty work only at Genesis retailers, nearest 70 min away. Estimate from CarEdge brand data.
10 Volvo 769 3.5/5, 17th European parts pricing; few independent specialists at the shore; nearest dealer 75 min.
11 Cadillac 783 3.0/5, 26th Highest annual cost in the group; electronics and suspension repairs are dealer-priced.

Sources: RepairPal brand pages (https://repairpal.com/reliability/toyota and the same path for each brand); CarEdge maintenance ranking https://caredge.com/ranks/maintenance (5-year totals: Toyota $1,814, Honda $2,185, Hyundai $2,256, Kia $2,335, Nissan $2,410, Chrysler $3,565); Genesis estimate from https://caredge.com/genesis/maintenance; Consumer Reports 10-year cost-of-ownership ranking https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/car-maintenance/the-cost-of-car-ownership-a1854979198/ (dollar figures are member-only, but the published order places Toyota and Honda near the bottom and Cadillac and Volvo well above average, consistent with the table).

What this means for the buyer

  1. Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Kia and Nissan sedans all have a franchised dealer 25-30 minutes from Ocean City, a backup within an hour, and the lowest running costs. Lexus and Acura add luxury comfort with one very close dealer but a long trip if that store ever disappoints.
  2. Genesis and Volvo should be treated as 70-plus-minute-per-visit brands. For a 75-year-old who values convenience, that is a real cost even when the car itself is reliable.
  3. If a Hyundai, Kia or Genesis is on the list, buy it CPO or accept that the famous 10-year powertrain warranty is really 5 years/60,000 miles for the second owner.
  4. Nissan is the only program in the group that bundles a year of prepaid maintenance with CPO; Toyota and Lexus carry the strongest reputation for low lifetime cost.

The research

How the search was framed, and what each stage found.

What we looked for

Who the car is for

Carol, 75, retired, in Ocean City, NJ. Around town; ~100 mi round trips to philadelphia. Annual mileage is low. She loved the Lincoln Town Car / large Cadillac comfort feel: roomy, quiet, and easy to get in and out of. Her main worry is maintenance cost.

Hard limits

BodyMid-size to full-size sedan, larger preferred
Model year2023 or newer; 2022 only if exceptional
MileageIdeal under 10,000; fine to 20,000; up to 50,000 only for a clearly nicer car
PriceSweet spot $32,000 to $40,000; hard cap $45,000 before trade
DistanceWithin 2.5 hours of Ocean City (about 150 miles), or a dealer transfer to a closer store
Where to buyfranchise dealer, CPO, dealer transfer to closer store, CarMax, Carvana

Colors

Yes: black, dark gray, gray, silver, white, dark blue, navy. Maybe: dark green, champagne, beige. No: red, yellow, pink, orange, bright blue, any loud color.

Inside: black, neutral, luxury stitching. Not racing stripes, sport/track trims, loud accents.

The wish list

  • heated front seats
  • ventilated front seats
  • large touchscreen
  • wireless Apple CarPlay
  • sunroof or panoramic roof
  • roomy rear seat
  • higher seating position
  • easy ingress/egress
  • quiet comfort-tuned ride
  • adaptive cruise
  • blind-spot monitoring
  • 360 camera
  • heated steering wheel
  • memory seats
  • power trunk
  • remaining factory or CPO warranty
  • low predictable maintenance cost

Neutral, on purpose

Hybrid, awd, engine power. A hybrid is not a plus at her mileage, but it is not held against a car either.

The trade-in

~2012 Toyota Camry, about 170,000 miles, well maintained, runs fine, exterior paint issues. Dealers have offered around $10,000. Every price on this site is before trade; the plan is to evaluate listings on net cost after trade; negotiate price and trade separately.

Models in the pool

Named at the start: Toyota Camry, Toyota Crown, Honda Accord, Lexus ES, Kia K5, Cadillac CT5.

Added after research: Genesis G80, Toyota Avalon (2022), Acura TLX, Chrysler 300, Nissan Maxima, Hyundai Sonata, Volvo S90, Lexus LS (tier 2 only).

Ruled out: Buick (no US sedans after 2020); Ford (no US sedans after 2020); Cadillac CT4 (too small).

Stage 1: which models fit

Fourteen models researched from manufacturer specs, reviews, reliability data, and ownership-cost estimates, then sorted into tiers.

2026-09-13. Full detail in models.md and brands.md. This page is the short version for deciding what to hunt for in Stage 2.

Tier A — hunt for these first

Model Why Watch out for
Lexus ES 350 (2022–2025, Luxury / Ultra Luxury) Softest, quietest ride in budget. 39.2 in rear legroom. Cheapest luxury brand to own (RepairPal $468/yr, regular fuel). L/Certified adds 2 yr unlimited miles. Lexus of Atlantic City is 25 min away. 2023 under 20k miles runs $35–45k. Sits low like a normal sedan. Only Ultra Luxury has the 360 camera. Skip F Sport. Only one Lexus dealer close by.
Toyota Crown (2023–2025, Limited) The only car here that fixes the entry problem: hip point ~4 in above a Camry, and CR/Edmunds/KBB all call out easy in and out. Limited already has ventilated seats, heated wheel, panoramic roof, 12.3 in screens. Shore Toyota 30 min away. 2023 Limited under 20k miles $34–38.5k. Hybrid-only (neutral). Ride is good but not as pillowy as the ES; rear headroom is tight. Low-mile examples are scarce.
Toyota Avalon Limited (2022) CR says the ride is “plusher than most Lexus models.” Biggest rear seat (40.3 in) and trunk of the Toyotas. Proven V6, RepairPal $463/yr, zero recalls. Sub-50k-mile Limiteds seen at $31–38k. Only the 2022 fits the year window and there are ~100 nationwide. Low stance. Factory bumper-to-bumper is gone; buy CPO.

Tier B — worth a listing search, need the right example

Model Why Watch out for
Genesis G80 2.5T Advanced (2022–2024) Nearest thing to a modern Town Car: 118.5 in wheelbase, very quiet, wide plush seats. 2023 under 20k $36–41k. Nearest dealer is Marlton, ~70 min, and warranty work must go to a Genesis retailer. CR rates reliability below average (electronics). Premium fuel. 10/100k powertrain does NOT transfer unless Genesis Certified.
Honda Accord Touring / EX-L (2023–2025) Size doubt was wrong: longest rear legroom (40.8 in) and biggest trunk (16.7 cu ft) of the mainstream cars. Cheapest to own of all 14. 2024 Touring under 20k $29.5–33.5k. Boardwalk Honda 25 min. Low hip point. No memory seat on any trim. Comfort is “composed,” not plush. Confirm the 2025 hybrid loss-of-power recall is closed.
Chrysler 300 Touring L (2022–2023) Most literal Town Car: 120 in wheelbase, rear-drive, soft, hushed, 40.1 in rear legroom. Cheap: 2023 under 20k $28–36k. Two CDJR dealers within 30 min. Electrical/software glitches are the known weak spot. Discontinued; resale will keep sliding. Ventilated seats, memory, adaptive cruise were all optional packages, so check every window sticker.
Hyundai Sonata Limited Hybrid / SEL (2024–2025) Surprisingly soft and quiet (“Lexus-like”), driver sits relatively high. Cheap: 2024 Limited under 20k $30–32k, one already listed in Egg Harbor Township. Shortest rear seat here (34.8 in). CR rates the hybrid below average; the gas SEL is the safe recipe. Powertrain warranty drops to 5/60k for second owner unless CPO.

Tier C — keep on the list only as fallbacks

  • Cadillac CT5 Premium Luxury: excellent seats, five dealers nearby, but firm ride, average noise, 11.9 cu ft trunk, premium fuel, and the highest brand repair cost ($783/yr). Not the Cadillac feel she remembers.
  • Volvo S90: gorgeous ride and seats, but premium fuel, $200+ oil changes, $769/yr, nearest dealer 75 min, and Volvo dropped it from the US after 2025.
  • Toyota Camry XLE: the baseline. Cheapest to run, but the smallest rear seat of the Toyotas and CR says entry is “a bit difficult.” Only beats the others on cost.
  • Acura TLX: reliable and cheap, but low, loud, 34.9 in rear legroom, premium fuel recommended.
  • Kia K5 EX: value play at $22–27k but low fastback, 35.2 in rear legroom, firm-ish ride.
  • Nissan Maxima: low sports-sedan shape, 34.2 in rear legroom, roofline “inhibits access.” Drop unless nothing else appears.
  • Lexus LS 500: perfect car, wrong budget. Under $45k means 55–80k miles. Only as a Tier 2 mileage exception on an L/Certified car.

What this means for Stage 2

  • Search hardest for: 2023–2025 ES 350 Luxury/Ultra Luxury, 2023–2025 Crown Limited, 2022 Avalon Limited.
  • Also pull: G80 2.5T Advanced, Accord Touring/EX-L, 300 Touring L, Sonata Limited/SEL.
  • Search the rest only to fill out the comparison.
  • Mom’s test drive should settle one thing the data cannot: whether the Crown’s raised seat matters more to her than the ES’s softer ride.

Data quality notes

  • Reviewer and reliability text is well sourced. Numeric J.D. Power scores and Edmunds True Cost to Own were mostly blocked, so per-model 5-year cost figures come from mixed sources; the brand-level RepairPal column is the fair comparison.
  • Used price bands are from a small number of listings observed this month and must be re-checked live in Stage 2.
  • CPO terms for Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Acura, Kia, Hyundai, Cadillac, Chrysler, and Volvo are from secondary pages and are flagged to confirm on the manufacturer site before purchase.

Stage 2: what is actually for sale

A sweep of listings within 150 miles of Ocean City, captured September 13, 2026.

286 listings across 14 models within 150 miles of Ocean City; 244 pass the hard gates (year, mileage, price, color, accident, rental, sport trim). Full data in data/listings.xlsx (Passing / Gated out / Models sheets), data/listings.csv, and data/mom-car.sqlite. Listings go stale quickly; re-run before any dealer visit.

Headline

  • Inventory is deep for the Lexus ES and Toyota Crown, thin for the Avalon. 96 passing ES listings and 41 Crowns, but only 2 real 2022 Avalons in range, both over 30k miles and 68+ miles away.
  • Nothing on the Tier A list sits within 30 miles. Local franchise stores (Lexus of Atlantic City, Shore Toyota) have no used ES or Crown Limited. Six passing cars are within 30 miles, and all of them are Tier B: a G80, an Accord, a Sonata, and a Chrysler 300.
  • No ES 350 Ultra Luxury exists in range. The ES market here is almost entirely base cars with the Premium package, which still includes heated and ventilated seats. Two ES 300h Luxury trims turned up.
  • Low-mile ES 350s cluster at $36–41k, but 100+ miles away (Long Island, Westchester, Baltimore). The closest low-mile ES cars are the AutoLenders stores in Williamstown (37 mi) and Voorhees (43 mi), priced $44–46k, right at the cap.
  • Crown Limited splits into two buckets: 2026 Toyota CPO cars under 10k miles at $43.8–46.7k, or 2023–2024 cars at 27–29k miles for $37–38.5k.

Gaps and caveats

  • Single-sourced. Cars.com supplied 265 of 286 listings. Autotrader was down and CarGurus, CarMax, Carvana, TrueCar, Edmunds, and Carfax all blocked automated reads, so cross-site de-duplication was impossible and some cars surely exist that we did not see. A browser session on CarGurus and Autotrader would widen the net.
  • 56 ES listings are search-row only (no VIN, no interior color, no history). They are kept for market context; scoring in Stage 4 favors the 48 fully detailed ES cars.
  • Distance is straight-line from Cars.com. Drive minutes are estimates. Anything in Long Island or Westchester is 2.5 hours or more in practice and should be treated as transfer-only.
  • 65 listings lack a hero image (mostly KBB rows and CarMax). The site build in Stage 5 will use a model stock photo as fallback.
  • Trade-in offers not yet collected. Net-after-trade will be filled in when dealers are contacted in Stage 6.
  • Shore Toyota’s 2026 Crown XLE (12 mi, 10,585 mi) has no published price; call (609) 849-5310.

What this means for Stage 4

  • Scoring should reward the ES’s comfort and cost profile but penalize the drive for the NY/MD cars, so the AutoLenders Williamstown and Thompson Willow Grove ES cars may outrank cheaper ones far away.
  • The 2026 Crown Limited CPO cars are the strongest “solve the entry problem” option and sit inside the $45k cap.
  • The local Tier B cars (Sonata Limited, Accord EX-L, G80, 300 Touring L) will score well on proximity and value; the question for Mom is whether they feel big and quiet enough.

Go-see plan

Who to call, what to ask, how to handle the trade-in, and the checklist for test-drive day.

Drafted 2026-09-13. Listings re-checked live the same day; all seven cars were still for sale. Prices move weekly, so confirm on the call. Log every answer in research/dealer-tracker.csv.

1. The call list

Seven cars, in the order to call. The first four are the real contenders. Five, six, and seven are the local comparison drives so Mom can feel the difference between a raised seat, a plush low sedan, and a cheap big car before choosing.

Two cars we did not put on the list: the 2026 Accord Touring in Towson (score #2) is Canyon River Blue and sits low, and the 2022 G80 at Sport Hyundai, 10 miles away, has two owners and a 70-minute trip to the nearest Genesis service point.

2. The call script

Call the sales number, ask for a salesperson on the used side, and say you are calling about a specific stock unit. Have the VIN ready. Work through these in order; the goal of the call is a written out-the-door number and a hold, not a negotiation.

Opening > Hi, I’m calling about the [year model trim], stock or VIN [ ]. Is it still on the lot and available today?

Confirm the car (2 minutes) 1. Is the mileage still [ ]? Has the price changed since it was listed at [ ]? 2. Is it [Toyota Certified / Lexus L/Certified]? Can you email the certification inspection sheet? 3. Can you email the window sticker or build sheet? I want to confirm [ventilated seats / panoramic roof / 360 camera / adaptive cruise]. 4. Can you send the CARFAX or AutoCheck? How many owners, any accidents, was it ever a rental or fleet car? Where did the car come from (lease return, trade, auction)? 5. Are there any open recalls? Any aftermarket add-ons or dealer accessories on the car? 6. Two keys? Floor mats? Original tires, and how much tread?

Get the real number (the important part) 7. What is the out-the-door price for a New Jersey buyer, with your doc fee, any dealer add-ons, and title and registration, before sales tax? I need it in writing by email. 8. Are there any mandatory add-ons (etch, nitrogen, protection packages, “market adjustment”)? If so, will you remove them? 9. If I pay cash or bring my own financing, is the price the same?

Trade-in, kept separate 10. I have a trade, a 2012 Camry with about 170,000 miles. I’ll get you the VIN and photos. Please quote the trade separately from the purchase price; I want two numbers, not one.

Logistics 11. Can you hold the car for [24 / 48] hours with a refundable deposit while we drive up? 12. Do you have a sister store closer to Ocean City, NJ where you could move the car for us to see it? (Jones, Thompson, Peruzzi, Lilliston, and AutoLenders all have multiple locations.) 13. Can you send a short walkaround video, including the seats, the driver’s door opening, and the trunk? 14. What is your return or exchange policy? (AutoLenders and CarMax have posted policies; franchise dealers usually do not.)

Close > Please email me the out-the-door sheet, the CARFAX, and the certification report today. I’m comparing [two or three] cars this week and will decide by [day].

Do not discuss monthly payments. Do not give a target price. If asked “what would it take,” say you are comparing written out-the-door numbers.

3. Trade-in script (the Camry)

Get three numbers before any dealer conversation so you know the floor. 1. CarMax instant offer (carmax.com/sell, needs VIN and photos, good for 7 days). 2. Carvana or KBB Instant Cash Offer online. 3. The dealer you are buying from, quoted separately.

Then, at the dealer: “Your trade number is [ ]. CarMax offered [ ]. Can you match it?” If they cannot, sell to CarMax and buy the car outright. With 170,000 miles and paint issues, a $10,000 offer is generous; if any dealer has already said $10,000, get that in writing with an expiration date.

New Jersey note: the trade-in value comes off the taxable price. On a $44,000 car, a $10,000 trade saves about $660 in sales tax versus selling it separately, so a dealer number can be about $660 lower than CarMax’s and still come out even.

4. Test-drive day

Route. Do the local two first on one morning: AutoLenders Egg Harbor (Sonata, 20 min from home) then Lilliston in Vineland (Chrysler 300, 30 min further). That gives Mom a “raised, modern” reference and a “big, soft, old-school” reference. Then pick one day for the Lexus/Crown trip: AutoLenders Williamstown (ES 350, 55 min) and Thompson Lexus Willow Grove (ES 350 CPO, 45 min beyond that), with Hatboro (2023 Crown) 15 minutes from Willow Grove if #5 is still in play. Bel Air, MD is a dedicated day, or a transfer request.

Bring. Driver’s license and insurance card (dealers photocopy both), the VIN list, this checklist, a phone for photos, and Mom’s reading glasses for the screen test. Wear the shoes she normally drives in.

Checklist, in the car, before it moves - [ ] Getting in: can she sit down and swing her legs in without ducking or dropping? Try it three times. This is the Crown-versus-ES question and only she can answer it. - [ ] Getting out: can she stand up from the seat without pulling on the door? - [ ] Seat: reaches a comfortable position with the power controls, sees over the hood, lumbar and thigh support feel right, seat memory button works. - [ ] Steering wheel reach and tilt; heated wheel turns on. - [ ] Screen: can she read it and hit the buttons? Try tuning the radio and setting the temperature without help. Wireless CarPlay connects to her phone. - [ ] Seats: heated and ventilated both run (ventilated is easy to miss; feel for airflow after two minutes). - [ ] Sunroof opens and closes; shade closes fully. - [ ] Rear seat: sit in it. Headroom and legroom. Door opening size. - [ ] Trunk: opens with the button, height of the lip, would her usual bags fit. - [ ] Mirrors, blind-spot lights, backup and 360 camera picture on the screen. - [ ] Inside condition: seat bolsters, driver’s door armrest, smells, smoker signs.

Checklist, on the road (20 minutes minimum, include a highway stretch and a rough road) - [ ] Noise at 65 mph: can you talk at a normal volume? - [ ] Bumps: does the car float over them or thump? Expansion joints on the Expressway are the test. - [ ] Brakes: smooth, no pulsing. - [ ] Any rattles, wind noise around the driver’s window, tire hum. - [ ] Adaptive cruise: set it once on the highway and see it hold distance. - [ ] Parking: turn into a tight spot with the camera. Does she feel the car’s corners? - [ ] Hybrid (Crown, Sonata): is the engine start-stop noticeable or bothersome to her?

Checklist, outside - [ ] All four tires same brand, tread depth (a penny in the groove: Lincoln’s head covered is fine). - [ ] Panel gaps even, paint matches on every panel, no overspray on trim (accident repair tells). - [ ] Windshield chips. All lights. - [ ] Under the hood: nothing wet, battery terminals clean.

Before signing, for a non-CPO car (#2, #5, #6, #7): a pre-purchase inspection at an independent shop, about $150 to $250, is worth it. For a CPO car (#1, #3, #4) the manufacturer inspection sheet is enough if you have it in hand.

5. What “yes” looks like

  • Written out-the-door number under $45,000 before tax, no add-ons.
  • Clean CARFAX, one owner, no rental history, CPO or a passed independent inspection.
  • Mom passes the getting-in-and-out test without thinking about it.
  • She can work the screen and the climate controls herself.
  • The car is in her color range and the interior is plain.

If two cars both pass, take the one with the lower ownership cost and the closer service, which in this list means the Toyota or Lexus over the Chrysler or Hyundai.

6. New Jersey buying notes

  • Sales tax 6.625% on the price after trade-in. Buying in PA or MD: you pay NJ tax at registration, not the other state’s; the dealer either collects NJ tax or you pay at MVC. Ask which.
  • Doc fees are not capped in NJ; $799 to $895 is typical, PA dealers are about $490. It is negotiable in effect, since the price is.
  • Title and registration: roughly $60 title plus registration by weight, about $85 to $110 a year.
  • NJ dealers must give a used-car buyer’s guide; “as is” versus “dealer warranty” is printed on the window sticker.
  • Out-of-state dealers will issue a temporary tag; the car gets NJ plates at MVC or through the dealer’s titling service.

How we scored

Each car gets seven scores from 0 to 100, one per factor. They are combined with the weights below into a single total. Comfort and ownership come from the model research and are the same for every car of a model; the other five come from the specific listing.

The weights

Worked example: the #1 car

2026 Toyota Crown Limited. Each factor's score is multiplied by its weight, and the contributions add up to the total.

What each factor measures

Comfort, room & seat height weight 30

From the model research, so every car of a model shares it.

  • 35% Town Car feel rating (1–5): how roomy, soft, and quiet reviewers say it is
  • 30% seat height rating (1–5): the higher the hip point, the easier to get in and out
  • 15% rear legroom, scaled between the smallest and largest in the pool
  • 12% cabin quietness and 8% ride tuning, as described by reviewers

Ownership cost & service weight 20

Also model-level. Her stated worry, so it is the second-largest weight.

  • 40% the brand's average yearly repair and maintenance cost (RepairPal), scaled cheapest to priciest
  • 30% the model's maintenance-worry rating from the research
  • 20% service access: how many franchised dealers sit within 45 minutes of Ocean City
  • 10% whether the car needs premium fuel

Value vs. market weight 15

Listing-level. Two parts.

  • 60% where the asking price sits in the going range for that model, year, and trim (at or below the bottom of the range scores 100; at the top scores 35). Lesser trims are compared against a lower range so they do not look like bargains.
  • 40% budget position: full marks up to $40,000, tapering to the $45,000 cap
  • Trade-in offers are not yet included; every price is before trade

Wish-list features weight 15

Listing-level, from the features the listing shows plus what is standard on that trim.

  • Ventilated seats and a sunroof count double
  • Heated seats, heated wheel, memory seats, wireless CarPlay, 360 camera, adaptive cruise, blind-spot monitoring count once each
  • Listings often under-report, so known standard equipment on Crown Limited, Accord Touring, Sonata Limited, and similar trims is credited

Mileage weight 8

  • Up to 10,000 miles: 100
  • 10,000 to 20,000: slides from 100 down to 72
  • 20,000 to 50,000: slides from 72 down to 20

Warranty / CPO weight 7

  • Manufacturer certified: 100
  • Otherwise by model year, for factory coverage left: 2026 85, 2025 75, 2024 55, 2023 35, 2022 15
  • Genesis, Hyundai, and Kia lose 15 when not certified, because the 10-year powertrain warranty does not pass to a second owner

Proximity weight 5

  • Within 30 miles: 100
  • 30 to 60 miles: 100 down to 80
  • 60 to 100 miles: 80 down to 50
  • 100 to 150 miles: 50 down to 25
  • No distance shown (transfer-only stock): 15

Cars removed before scoring

  • Any reported accident, branded title, or prior rental or fleet use without a certified warranty
  • Exterior colors outside black, gray, silver, white, and dark blue; sport or striped interiors
  • Sport trims: F Sport, A-Spec, Type S, GT-Line, V-Series, 300S, XSE, Sport Prestige
  • Over 50,000 miles, model year 2021 or older, or listed more than $2,000 above the cap

Things to keep in mind

  • Scores bunch together near the top: the top 25 all sit between 79 and 83, so read the meters, not just the rank.
  • Distance is straight-line. Long Island and Westchester cars are 2.5 hours or more in real traffic and are best treated as transfer requests.
  • "Sparse listing data" means the listing showed no VIN, interior color, or history. The car may be fine; the record is thin.
  • Hybrid, all-wheel drive, and engine power are neutral by design.
  • Only Cars.com, KBB, and Capital One Auto Navigator allowed automated reads. Other sites block them, so some cars surely exist that are not here.
